Cellphones are an addiction to such a degree that

even when they aren’t allowed, they are allowed.

This morning at the doctors office/clinic, I was looking at this huge sign in the middle of the waiting area. It said something like “(name of my clinic) is a cell phone free area” with picture of a cell phone with a circle and slash through. Looking around I see that all of the 7 or 8 people in the waiting area are using them. Staff doesnt say a word.

The same goes for our state law against distracted driving. YOu arent supposed to text , or read or use any electronic device in any way that distracts you from driving unless you are pulled over and at a complete stop.

Yet 90% of the time you see a driver screwing up or not going when a light is green or driving super slow or whatever, when you go past them, they are holding their cell phone, and it seems like this law is rarely enforced. Or at least I dont see it enforced…

Anywho…I guess cell phones are more important than the rules…

I would guess that the cell phone free zone means that you can’t talk on it. Not that you can’t operate one…
Your just reading the sign too strictly

I really dont think so. I’ve seen people make calls as well. And I’m pretty sure you are not supposed to have them out and be using them at all. Part of which is probably the rules about not taking pictures or recordings in medical facilities for the sake of patient privacy.

No, I’m pretty sure you’re just not allowed to be talking because the noise pollution is a problem. Also if taking photographs was a problem they would just direct you not to do so. (Like on a Greyhound)

I’m like 95% sure you’re wrong. Why would the sign say no cell phones with a line through when it could say no talking on cell phones?

As far as pictures go…how are they gonna know whether you are taking pictures or texting?

Well on greyhounds they just ask you not to take photos. Taking the phones would probably be too complicated.

It’s just my experience that in public places when they ask for you not to use phones. It’s usually because of noise and it’s perfectly acceptable and understandable to continue to use the computer part of your phone

I’m sure they wouldnt take the phones , just ask them to not have them out, on and in use.

I am trying to not use my phone while driving but sometimes its hard. It does distract me and I am afraid of getting into a car accident especially on the highway when cars suddenly break from traffic

@Bowens

I see the same thing at the Veterans Administration clinics. There’s a sign with a picture of a cellphone with a circle and line, but everybody uses their cellphone in the waiting rooms. And there’s always that guy talking to someone on speaker.

Smartphone usage in certain places such as hospitals & medical buildings ought to be respected. There should be some sort of smartphone edicate for each country as no one country uses smartphones the same as others.

Smartphones are an essential part of everyday life for the majority of human beings on this planet. Smartphones are not an addiction but a way of life if not abused in terms of long duration usage.

I would argue that if smartphones are a way of life, they are an addiction. :stuck_out_tongue:

as far as hospitals. the signals can interfere with medical equipment.

Some of our members have said that they were allowed to have their cellphone while in the psych ward, but I don’t think they live in the U.S.

And I’ve seen people making phone calls on airplanes. Maybe that’s okay on airplane mode.

Yes, I agree. That is why some hospitals have Radio Frequency dampeners that suppress cellular communications in hospitals. At least this is how the hospital I went to enforced the “no smartphone usage” policy. Not all hospitals have these RF dampeners/attenuators.

I think the primary concern may be patient privacy in a medical setting. It seems like folks these days will take photos of almost anything. This is more a people problem than a cell phone problem.

My medical providers all allow cell phones in their medical offices and facilities. In the ER and hospital , all of the medical staff carry their cell phones. That is one of their primary communication methods.

Cell phone? What’s that? Like inmates in jail have phones in their cell now? :face_with_monocle:
