Can you have a phone in a psych ward where you live

Here you can unless there’s a good reason for a doctor to take it away

I was so out of it. I was given one under supervision.

I’ve been to three different psych wards and none of them let us have our phones so I did a lot of pacing, reading and watching TV. I used their phones to call my parents. We had groups all day too.

We were allowed to have our phones too without good reason to take them away. They had ipads and a chromecast, so you could borrow one and stream to the big tv.

Headphones, phones, laptops are allowed on the ward where I’m currently staying. But we do have a list of barred items that needs to be kept in the locker room. I suppose these are the items that can cause hazard or harm to self and other patients.

Taking your phone for sake of just taking away that’s pretty cruel. But then again I understand if there’s risk scenario where you cannot have a phone right now. As long as there’s no tyranny involved I’m okay.

No. We aren’t allowed in the states. It’s not a good rule.

I only ever saw one person have their phone taken away

He was photographing patients and kept calling the police saying the hospital had kidnapped him

No one had personal mobile phones or laptop computers the last time I was in a psych ward.

Nope, no cell phones here. I think it’s partly due to confidentiality rules so you can’t photograph other patients, and also so you go to groups instead of scrolling in bed all day.

Your psych wards still have groups? They did away with those here over two decades ago. They require additional staff to run. God forbid the health care system here spends a penny more than necessary.

I think doing away with group and art therapy etc. is understandable…if it means that healthcare is more equitable. But I havent experienced it

If equitable means that everyone gets poor health care, they have achieved that lofty goal.

Except that they haven’t. Those who can afford private therapy are all doing better.

Here the groups are mostly educational, and there’s one they call “productive activities” where you can paint ceramics or read or color, whatever you want to do that occupies mind and body. They also have a goals group every day and twice a week they have pet therapy where a dog comes onto the ward and we play with the dog. There’s also a nutrition group once a week where the patients get to pick a meal and cook it the next day (it’s VERY supervised!).

I remember those groups from before they disappeared. You know how irritating it is for someone with chef training to be in one and watch people @$%# up poaching an egg or not even be able to put Cheez Whiz into a stick of celery?

I get that! It’s hard for me as a former Registered Dietitian to sit and listen to someone talking about macronutrients on a lay level.
