Ill be adopting a cat soon.
Got many supplies for him/her already.

It would be good to make a checklist of stuff you need like a lazer pointer, catnip etc basically anything that will make it go ape.

cats like to play with rubber bands, and small plastic balls…catnip is always good to watch them freak the hell out. haha

Many cats, but not all cats, are afraid of new places. So, your new kitty friend might hide under the furniture. You can try putting treats near where they are hiding, to help them warm up to you. Let them see you, at least your hand, placing the treats down for them, and say something in a soft voice about the treats.

When they first get to their new home, I recommend letting them out of the carrier near the litter box. If they let you touch them, you can place them in the litter box. They will leave it pretty quickly, but this can help them register in their mind where the litter box is located, and so hopefully you won’t have accidents around the house.

When I’ve moved homes with my 2 cats, we always show them the litter boxes, first. We also use Cat Attract litter. Then they hide, but after a few days, they start exploring the new place and getting more confident.

I can’t think of anything else, off the top of my head. But I hope this helps. :relaxed:

My cat goes apeshit over a plain dried pinto bean. He plays with it till I take it away.
We have hardwood floors though. Won’t do much on the carpet.
I always worry that he’ll choke on it though, so maybe not a great idea.

Good luck picking your kitty. I would urge you to keep him/her as an indoor cat. They dont attack wildlife, wont get run over and they are more affectionate.

Remember to take your time in picking visit a few times to make sure he/she is the one! Shelter cats are great and even better if the cat and you have a bond forming before you take them home. Remember scoop litter box twice a day for no stinky home, some kitties won’t use an overly dirty litter box. You can trane a cat with patience and consistency just like you would a dog. Not all cats dislike water. Kitty will hide so I’d suggest letting kitty out of cage near a safe hiding spot with litter box nearby. Not all kitties like catnip and/or Lazer lights. Kitties need a place to scratch so a scratch pad is recommended. Most kitties like to look out windows and cat trees. Make sure to pet your kitty daily and if you want kitty to sit in your lap place kitty gently in your lap and pet kitty softly saying good kitty. Kitties can be great and shelter kitties are no exception, make sure to show your kitty lots of love and attention

Lots of great advice.

Once your kitty becomes bonded to you he or she will follow you everywhere, in between naps, even to the bathroom.

Hope you do not mind a cat sleeping between your legs when you sleep.

Oh and cats are notorious nibblers so if he repeatedly begs for food, even with a full dish, that means they just want attention.

Enjoy!

My advice is that if your cat doesn’t groom itself much (because of age), and doesn’t like brushing or combing, and gets matted, it IS worth it to pay the veterinarian anesthesiologist the $600 to $800 to have the cat professionally shaved. I know from experience because I didn’t pay it. But that applies only if you have the money to spare. If not, I’d say to put it down.

Not a good idea. They can choke on rubber bands or have GI problems if ingested.

You’ll need scratching posts.

Cats need boxes etc to hide in. Cat trees are great - they love them! Maybe get some canned tuna to entice the cat to come out of hiding eventually. If the cat hides under something, put the tuna within the cats reach and then give him /her space to come get it without you there. Eventually it’ll build trust and will start coming for tuna even if you’re nearby.

Also, there’s a hormone spray you can get that helps the cat to feel calm. Try that as well as cat litter. Good luck!
