Cardio Conditioning on APs

I’ve been thinking of getting into running/ jogging again. Used to be an animal at running and cycling, but on antipsychotics I could never get decent cardio conditioning, so my running performance/ fitness never improved even after diligent and methodical training. Last time I did cardio training on paliperidone/ invega/ xeplion the amount of effort I put in would have been enough prior to run a half marathon/ marathon, but I simply just never improved performance or stamina -wise. I’m on Rexulti now, and forty years old, so I’m interested to see if my running days are completely over.

Running/ Cardio Conditioning on APs
  • My cardio condition improved on APs
  • My cardio condition stayed the same on APs
  • My cardio condition got worse on APs

On my current meds my heart rate stays in the 90bpm usually when I am walking around the house. When I start to do physical work around the house my heart rate goes to around 120. I last wore a heart rate monitor while racing BMX and I got my heart rate up to 165-170 maxed 20 years ago while taking max dose of Tricyclic antidepressant Nortryptaline and min dose antipsychotic Perphenazine.

Swimming is best as you won’t have impact on your joints

The very notion of being in competition with yourself is self defeating in the end.

The tides of time mean that it will always be a losing game.

There is a reaon why there are very few 40 year old olympians.

Why can’t you just enjoy doing the running or cycling in its own right?

simply because cycling and running is not enjoyable if your body cant adapt and adjust to it

feels bad

It will, just much more slowly.

All the older action movie actors do fitness regimes for their roles and get in some serious shape.

Ok, so we are on meds, so even slower, but still progress can be made.

Personally for me. the risperidone gives me leg cramps after 2 miles or 5km on a stationary bike, so I understand. That is a rare side effect though.

Do you think, perhaps, you are looking for excuses to not just get up and do it?

it may have no benefit beyond just walking is the problem

For neurotypicals the couch to 5km is supposed to take 9 weeks.

So be prepared for a long effort!

And to be honest, if you don’t enjoy it then any interest won’t last long…

Look up Psychomotor retardation understand that antipsychotics lower dopamine and that amphetamines which increases dopamine are band in sport because of cardiac out. Rate of perceived exertion is not the same as actual exertion. Mind state has a lot to do with how long you can push or hold steady state cardio. You will know this if you ever rocked up tired to training session, it’s like that every training session when you are on antipsychotics

My conditioning defos got worse on APs, but that could also be due in part to the huge lifestyle changes that can occur once you start taking these kinds of meds.

We all know the kinds of side effects these meds can potentially have, so I won’t list them here— but yes, in short, I think that the side effects that brought about negative lifestyle changes defos had an effect on my conditioning overall.

I think it’s rad that you’re thinking about getting back into fitness— defos very motivating and wishing you the best with it :+1:

I’ve been riding bike and lifting weights and it’s a completely different world compared to before. I was able to quickly get me strength and stamina up in my 20s but now I’m afraid to even push Because I’m so unhealthy because of the meds/bad habits.

I’ve been trying to do better on eating and staying consistent with working out so I guess I’m about to find out as well if I can get back to where I was before. I think for me it’s age and meds but I also took creatine when I trained my body before.
