Can you ‘learn’ to live off the grid?

I want to live in the north woods in Wisconsin.

I want electricity, satellite internet and no gas or A/C. I would plan on using a wood burning stove for heat. Probably trapping and hunting for food.

But I’m a product of the suburbs. I imagine there are plenty of YouTube videos of anything i would need to do.

Family would never let me do it though. I’d be too isolated…

In the event of a Civil War I’d cut off the Internet, TV, and phone, and try to be as inconspicuous as I could. I’d have to live off the grid or become a target.

I always thought about running away to a hippie commune.

I thought about communes too while young. But do look at the YouTube videos on log cabin building and trapping, hunting, starting a fire in the woods on a raining night. Very interesting and informative- you could learn a lot. But if you really can’t do it, its wonderful to do it with the authors of those videos. Don’t just let that one go unexplored. But people are doing it who have shared their experience!

I dont see why not.

Internet would be hella expensive though.

Personally, I like living close to other people. I feel safer that way.

I lived in a commune. Sharing gets old. People there tend to be weird and not always in a good way. Your best bet is getting farm property in a nice hippie community in Maine or Oregon but still having your own space

The problem with living off the grid is that it is incredibly boring. I LOVE fishing and hunting, but if I had to do it as a means for survival I’d hate it. It’s a fun escape, but I want to keep it as an escape.

I lived semi off the grid for a few months out in the Aleutian islands. It was okay.
