Can you drink alcohol while on anti psychotics?

I saw doctor today but I forgot to ask him. Anybody here know? Just wanna make sure its not dangerous

i drink wine daily 2 glasses no problem here… i am on abilify 30mg

I drink on them, but you should ask your doctor ofcourse. The AP’s I’ve had both had a warning on them to be moderate with alcohol (Risperdal and Abilify). From the prescriptions I got that the main thing that happens is that you will have motor- and reaction-issues a bit faster than normally on alcohol. You would have these if you drink a lot normally, not being able to walk straight etc. But on the meds you’ll have this with less drinks. Like always, moderation seems to be key.

I’ve drank heavily on anti-psych’s, and it hasn’t killed me yet. There’s no telling what it has done to my liver, though.

I cannot drink, nor do I have the real urge to drink alcohol.
I just take too many meds like benzos on a daily basis, this would interfere with the alcohol.

Gave up on drinking alcohol years ago, it is not worth it.
But if you feel like having an occasional drink of beer or wine, I would talk it over with your pdoc

It’s ok to drink SOME alcohol. But not on a daily basis and not on big doses as I said.

My pdoc tells me that the there is a serious potential for seizure if you drink on APs.

Basically, more than three drinks (by drink I mean the equivalent of a 12oz beer or a shot of whiskey) is not a good idea, intoxication can interfere with the effect of antipsychotics and make you crazy.

All of this talk about drinking makes me want to drink.

I’ve heard that alcohol can sort of mess with the effectiveness of the meds.

I don’t drink anymore… sober for 6 years. I think that also might be why I am Ok on lower doses.

Yeah benzos and alcohol are a bad mix. Had half a glass of bubbly on Christmas day: passed out for 4 hours

I think once a wile its ok, if your on low dose, but continously will reduce the effectivness of your med, and the worst part it can cause permanent side effects.

A long time ago I drank because antipsychotics at the time did nothing for me.

More recently, I was sober when I saw what it was doing to my son and it made me sick.
But since he finally moved on and is doing well, I took up drinking again to deal with husband stress.

Too much and it can cause symptoms to flare up.
But some actually helps me relax since my doc doesn’t do benzos and I don’t want to either.
So its a choice alcohol OR Benzos, Never both.

But I’ve mixed alcohol and antipsychotics. It gives me an extra layer of calmness.
Now how much you drink is an individual matter. If you ask your pdoc they’ll probably say no to cover their ass.
So you have to do your own titration.

They say you are not supposed to as it can increase the lethargy/tiredness that can be caused by an antipsychotic. It’s not something I’ve particularly noticed though.

Yeah but I would always take your meds well before hand to let them properly absorb into your body.

I drank so much last month. No really issues. One night I almost set a pr for number of beers.

Anyways day 4 or 5 no alcohol.

It’s dangerous because you get plastered pretty quickly.
