can ECT assist those of us with Schizophrenia?
ECT, Electro-Convulsive Therapy, or Electro Shock Therapy

i dont know how it’s done these days - ive never had it done for Treatment Resistant Depression - though i now wish i had, because none of the avenues ive been treated with have assisted with healing, other than medical marijuana, which is now seen as smth that everyone has got to avoid, avoid, avoid at all costs, and Dextroamphetamine IR for TRD, which of course has potential long-term side effect dangers, which i may or may not have experienced.

ECT, from seeing it in films, and from hearing about it, used to scare me - but now that the voices are smth i have to deal with (no choice there), from literally single-minutes upon waking up in the morning, until the moment i fall asleep, im willing to take almost any avenue, despite the short-term and long-term side-effects, if it is approved for my healthcare

has anyone had ECT performed on them? did you lose memories that you know you once had? for instance, a family member asking you and a time and place, and you having no recollection of it? does it affect cognition (daily cognitive abilities)?

it seems a moot point to ask about these things, because these are side-effects, and im not worried about side-effects, as long as the treatment shows promise for some individuals, but id still like to know either way, until the point in time when i get a new doctor and can ask about possibilities for treatment

THANKS! =)

n/m: found a page in the faq on ECT
im a new user; i can’t link up to it

Two members here had ECT, but they’re not active anymore. They were both resistant to all medication, and it was a last resort. They don’t just try ECT on anyone. But if you’ve exhausted all other possible treatments, it can work.

hopefully they recovered. I’d image if I recovered, I wouldn’t be here.

You may want to look into repetitive Transcranial Magenetic Stimulation (rTMS). Here is a study:

I had the old school ECT; I had the brutal kind. It was done in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

I had two courses of ECT to lift me out of depression. The doctor was pleased with the results he got on me.

I probably had worse damage from a couple automobile accidents I got myself into.

I’ve lived a good life.

ive had symptoms of sza since 1999. i didn’t start hearing voices until last summer, june. it started out they were positive ones, like advice from people i knew or didn’t know, even people i had only heard of. i cannot remember when the voices started getting negative, but they’ve pretty much been negative ever since. and because they are so relentless, every day, and random, i can’t even have just one good day. i used to have good days, because my Faith got me through everything. i still believe it can. i just gotta get on the right meds to balance out things upstairs.

I’ve seen ECT do a lot of good for treatment resistant depression when I was at the psychiatric facility in Dallas, Texas. For a while I wanted it because nothing helped my schizophrenia symptoms. Now I’m not so sure. Sometimes I think I still want it.

When I was terribly uncomfortable, my sleep was still safe. Some folks tell me they hear voices when they are asleep, too.

Schizophrenia is not the same for everyone.
