Can antipsychotics in rare cases give psychotic experiences

I was on 4.5 mg Cariprazine and had no problems with my thoughts.

Then I had a crisis and my pdoc put olanzapine 5 mg on top of my cariprazine.

I know from previous experiences that Olanzapine in my case can cause something alike “intrusive thoughts” and oh my god, two days after olanzapine was added i had severe “intrusive thoughts” for several days in a row so now i will stop taking olanzapine and keep to cariprazine.

Have you experienced something similar?

Seroquel drove me bananas and made my psychosis worse.

Thanks, good to know i’m not the only one. Seroquel (quetiapine) and Olanzapine are a bit similar, both ends with -pine

There is something called Paradoxical Reaction, when a drug reacts the opposite as it should

Interesting. I’m angry angry psychotic woman on Saphris and I’m not an angry person at all.

I noticed some new symptoms while transitioning or switching from Vraylar to Olanzapine recently. I was hearing voices for the first time. But it went away so far.

I have cognitive impairment but the NP said it doesn’t do that. I feel lower functioning in a lot of ways.

In the past, I had negative reactions to Topamax. I also will never take ADHD medication, obviously. I thought it would help me study.

I smoke cigarettes and drink energy drinks so there’s a lot of stuff I can change and improve upon.

I’m worried about the potential for weight gain and diabetes.

I am currently on 5mg zyprexa and also have struggled with drug induced intrusive thoughts.

I take niacinamide and inositol to counter it. Works very well for me. Probably reduces the problem by 95%.

Unfortunately quitting zyprexa is not a option for me as I have grown dependant on it for sleep. I tried switching to other meds a few times, but they were all failures.

Interesting @anon76260202 my intrusive thoughts are a bit similar to what someone calls internal voices.

Yes @Mr_Hope i’m also worried i have to stick to olanzapine because in every other way it works very good.

Thanks for your answers

I went manic but manageable on abilify

How long did you take it for? I find any ap will intensify hallucinations at the beginning for Ike a week or two then begin to work like they should. It’s how they’ve always worked for me. If you were only on it for a few days or something I’d say stick to it and give it time to work.

I have tried olanzapine several times, alså for years, and even though it’s a very good ap and I don’t have weight gain, I still get these intrusive thoughts, and they stop every time I stop taking olanzapine.

So it’s a dilemma, i like most of olanzapines effects but the intrusive thoughts are very painful, telling me to harm myself etc.

My relative has personality disorder and they were given an antipsychotic but it made them psychotic even when they never had it . She had to go off it.

Vraylar made me super manic
Had to be hospitalized

Abilify also made me manic a bit but not nearly as bad as Vraylar

It is strange such a thing can happen, but thanks to the answers to my question @Wave @Ish it makes me more sure that i have a “paradoxical reaction” now it is less hard to say to a pdoc that such a thing can happen.

Vraylar does not make me manic, in fact i can hardly tell if there is any effect even though i am on 4.5 mg.
