just wondering if anyone here owns or is paying up a mortgage? i’d love to own my own property but the rules are so confusing, i tried looking into it, it looks like if i wanted a mortgage to pay off a flat/house then i’d need a steady job for at least 3-5yrs,
Get a job man. You can do it!
thanks @insidemind i been trying for so long it is very hard, i know some people think oh, its easy, but its got to be what i want to do and what i can deal with,
if it was just a case of ‘do that’ i couldnt do it bc thats how i had a breakdown the first time, i wasnt happy in my job i was unwell before but that was enough to throw me over the edge.
now i think know what i want to do, in fact i have a few options to explore, hopefully i’ll be volunteering at a cafe soon maybe a couple of hours here and there and it could lead to paid work,
then i’m thinking about working with dogs and animals (i love dogs). i also want to get my mini bus license bc my main goal is to work in the voluntary sector, its complicated but its what i want to do.
Sounds like you have a plan.
yeah, its changed so much through the years but i still want to do it, the rules are changing in a couple of years as well but i dont want that to stop me, if i can make £500 a month legally then i’ll be happy,
the rules in the uk are changing again so when universal credit comes in then its something like the first 4hrs of work are disregarded but then 60% of every £1 after that gets deducted from our benefits, so my cushy £500 a month goes down to only about £300pm which i think is not fair.
There are some houses for people on benefits. However I believe once you get a house you will have a certain amount in assets and therefore won’t be able to get ESA anymore. But you won’t loose your disability.
I am sure there must be a way around it because surely if you already have a house and need ESA then they must have to give it you…I don’t know. I’m trying to work all this out my self as I’m hoping to get a house also in the next few years.
Citizens advice beaurea is a good place to start.
I can’t remember do you live in the states if you don’t mind me asking?
I’ll be looking to build a house with my partner in the next year or so. I don’t live on benefits though. Here in Australia it is impossible to live on benefits and pay off a unit or flat. Our real estate is some of the most expensive in the world and our welfare benefits are criminally low. They are 20% below the poverty line. Research has indicated that about about 80% of people here can’t afford private rentals.
i’m in Scotland,
apparently i’m not supposed to have more than £6000 savings
Don’t know the rules there. I didn’t think you were in the US, but my memory isn’t the best
its very complicated, i think the government would save money if i bought my own place but i think you have to declare all your assets, i reckon i need to speak to a specialist about this. there are different types of mortgages as well, i’d like to invest in a property.
I have some savings(I was able to work for 8 years), plus I worked in finance so I think on this topic at times.
But I’m from the states so I don’t know the rules for you. But your not the only one who thinks about this stuff.
would be nice to own my own place, i could pick a really nice place, i thought i could rent it out if i wasnt using it but i dont think that is allowed as i live in a council flat on housing benefit,
the government doesnt make it easy for us but the irony is that it would probably save them loads of money.
Yes it would be nice. I began living with my folks a long time ago to try and accumulate enough for a down payment. This was before I knew a lot about what was happening to me.
I never got it done, and also now feel reliant on my folks. But I’m trying not to be hard on myself, this disorder can affect you in a lot ways.
