I was just looking into Buddhism as a possible philosophy for life. Anyone on here Buddhist? If so, what are some things I should know and do you have any good beginner’s websites I can review? Thanks.
If I were to pick a philosophy to live by I’d probably choose buddhism. It’s like atheism + mastery of the self and harmony. That’s how I see it anyways.
I choose to find my own path though. The concept of Buddhism is inspiring though. To shine those peoples lives and minds. The peace the emanate.
“Unmistaken child” is a good documentary on such things.
Worth a watch.
Just like any philosophy or religion, there are different types.
A few books that inspired me…
I’ve had good luck with books by Thich Nhat Hanh
“where every you go there you are”
And the Dali Lama has some good books that describe the basics.
I’m not fully a practicing Buddhist, but I do like reading what I can.
I grew up in the practice of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism the link for the Soka Gakkai is here. The main foundation of our practice is chanting Nam myoho renge kyo. We also chant portions of the Lotus Sutra but that particular chant is the title of the sutra. It calls out to your Buddhahood, which is inside all of us, and raises your life condition. When you have a high life condition you attract what you need to your life. One thing that you will see on the site is member’s experiences. At meetings someone usually shares an experience in their life where chanting has overcome some kind of obstacle. “Buddha in your mirror” is an awesome book that explains Buddhism in ways that are pretty profound. The cool thing is though that you don’t need to understand how it works but chanting will work for anything you want. In my own life I have chanted for simple things like finding a parking spot to really difficult obstacles like battling the court system for pretty serious charges and the results make it clear that it was the chanting that did it. People come into your life at the right time or events occur in a way that is beyond coincidence. That’s where member’s experiences come into our practice. People in countries all over the world practice this Buddhism and see actual results. It is a religion though not a philosophy and the SGI is recognized as a world religion. Good luck in your quest.
The library is good
As @SurprisedJ mentions there is a book called Where Ever You Go There You are… The name of the auther is Jon Kabat-Zinn. However the book is not about Buddhism it is about a practice called mindfulness whis is mainly based on the buddhist meditation practice. As far as i know mindfulness is also linked to cbt. On the other hand Jon Kabat-Zinn quotes a girl who is saying that “When i am Buddhist things go pear shaped at home but whem i am Buddha things are in good shape.” From Zinn’s book i learned that Buddha did not call himself Buddha at all and that it means "the one who is awakened.
What did the buddist monk say to the hot dog vendor? - “Make me one with everything.”
“What The Buddha Taught,” – by Walpola Rahula
“Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind,” – by Shunryu Suzuki
“The Teachings of the Compassionate Buddha,” – by E. A. Burtt
“The Four Noble Truths,” by the Dalai Lama
(These are more comprehensive and intellectual than the mindfulness books but they give a good overview if you don't mind being challenged.)
i follow a buddhist mentality…my favorite is
letting be
all your thinking is conceptual mind
so give up the doings of this mind and rest
and as " rest " is also just a word
give up holding on to words and let be
songsten gampo, the first Dharma, king of tibet
