Catch-22 by Joseph Heller: bizarre, but insightful book about WWII
Slaughterhouse-5 by Kurt Vonnegut: bizarre, but insightful book about WWII–although beware there are references to time travel and alien abduction, so maybe don’t read this if you’ve had alien delusions.
Just Like Somebody Without Mental Illness Only More So by Mark Vonnegut MD: formerly diagnosed as a schizophrenic, then later as bipolar, Dr. Vonnegut is Kurt Vonnegut’s son who wrote this autobiographical tale of his recovery, admission and graduation from med school, and his relapses/struggles/triumphs afterwards.
Clans of the Alphane Moon by Philip K. Dick: a future where mentally ill people are rocketed to the moon and abandoned to fend for themselves…little does earth know that they too will be embroiled in a horrible mess leading to potential global devastation…the only thing that can save the world now is a CIA agent and those on the moon who’ve created social hierarchies (Pares are the paranoids, Manses are the weapon-building manics, the Deps (nearly catatonic depressives), skitzes (visionaries and poets), and more! Funny, tragic, beautiful all it once, this book came to mean more than just a Philip K. Dick book, it helped me see myself as a member of a sz community!
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou: painful, beautiful, once-in-a-lifetime poetry!
The Mercy by Philip Levine: Americana poetry with a fierce sizzle
I threw in a poetry book for fun

books are cool, but having them read to you is nice to.

Oh sorry then1525152615

If you want something light, in all seriousness you can’t go wrong with Charlotte’s Web.

It’s a classic piece of ‘young adult’ literature that’s timeless.

For non-fiction I really recommend, All I Really Need to Know – I Learned in Kindergarten.

For a classic, I really love Siddartha by Herman Hesse. Sorry if I spelled the title wrong.

Ironweed by William Kennedy is another one that popped into my mind. But as a warning it’s a very sad book.

Good luck on getting back into reading @roxanna!
