This article is a bummer! At the beginning of Covid, I read ACE inhibitors protect against Covid
So I was super excited to be taking an ACE inhibitor [Losartin] already. I guess I have to go all-in on diltiazem (it lowers blood pressure by blocking calcium channels) instead.
But it now makes sense that SCZs have different Covid outcomes. They enter the ICU at lower rates but die at higher rates. It probably means that at least some people with SCZ have altered ACE levels and therefore they have different Coivd outcomes . . .

Since the onset of schizophrenia tends to be in relatively young adulthood, while most people start blood pressure meds in middle age or older, I’m not sure I understand the implications of this article.
If I understand right the medicine (ACE inhibitors) increase the risk of SCZ. When researchers learned this they studied people with low ACE gene expression and discovered those people are more at risk of SCZ.
ACE apparently interacts with dopamine (dopamine is thought to me the main driver of SCZ) Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) interacts with dopaminergic mechanisms in the brain to modulate prepulse inhibition in mice - PubMed (Prepulse Inhibition is thought to be a marker of SCZ) Reduced Prepulse Inhibition as a Biomarker of Schizophrenia - PubMed
Going to talk to my doc tomorrow about my BP meds. So I was just researching this and found this new study
Conclusions and relevance: Findings suggest an adverse association of lower ACE messenger RNA and protein levels with schizophrenia risk. These findings warrant greater pharmacovigilance and further investigation into the effect of ACE inhibitors, particularly those that are centrally acting, on psychiatric symptoms in patients with schizophrenia, as well as the role of ACE inhibitor use in late-onset schizophrenia.
