Black box warnings, is no one concerned?

These antipsychotics clearly state a black box warning on them.

Do any of you guys ever think about sudden death or coma while taking these? Possible allergies do happen and anti depressants kill 40,000 a year so ive read not that I can prove it

Anyone feel mental health is a physical risk? All views welcome

In all honesty I’d rather be dead than ill again. I’m not going to live my life as a freakshow. I don’t care about warnings.

I can deal with my mental illness for a while but I prefer sudden death to no chance of recovery. And from experience I seriously doubt recovery is possible for me without these meds. It’s a calculated risk.

Very fearless I must say.

There’s warnings on bottles of aspirin.

Exactly the opposite. I fear being ill.

Hmm I guess if these meds help then the risks are worth it for yourself.

After 5 relapses, I’ve come out the other side not being afraid of anything. My meds work for me so I’m willing to put up with a ‘slight’ risk in order that I have better mental health…so I can work…be a good Dad and husband…etc.

Can’t put it any better than that. Also, I don’t care if the meds make my dick fall off. I can live without a dick. I can’t live without my mind.

@vampireeye , when I mentioned sudden death to you, I was referring to cancer drugs and one I was taking for MS.
Those black box warnings are for the elderly. Antipsychotics were given to keep old people in nursing homes quiet, even to people that were not diagnosed schizophrenia.

That is a quite different from why people here take them. It is a choice, every med has side effects. But the benefits outweigh the risks. If a med is not helping you, then I think people here can make the choice to not take them.

The people here are much more rational than your average unmediated out of control person on the street. So its a select group that has enough focus at the time to read and post here.

Very good response, strangely I suffer from side effects a 60+ year old would get and im only 25 years old.

So black box warning on rare chance can effect a young man. I do feel these meds are quite powerful and for myself ill be trying the organic approach from now on. It it works for others its great honestly before my adverse effects meds were just meds to me.

But I see that meds prescription can be just as bad as illegal ones. Yes they hand out APs to non SCZ people to shut em up for sure.

Nice topic!

Yes, I have total paranoia when it comes to medications. I always think they are hurting me. My psychiatrist probably hates me as a patient, as I am always finding a reason to not take a medication. The slightest side effect is enough for me to walk away from a medication. Although, I have been doing better lately.

I disagree here with some of the posts. I learned the hard way trying to change medications from Loxapine to Clozaril. I blacked out for several days and almost died. So, I learned to respect these drugs and make my peace with them. When I go on new medication, I make a point to read the literature that comes with them thoroughly, although mostly in amusement at how detailed they are and how they cover every possible contingency. Another strong disagreement I have taken with several of these posts is that I am 74 now and don’t like the tone of the posts about older people. I’m probably the oldest person on this forum and need your respect, if not for my negative credentials, which we all share in common, then for my advanced age, and for the fact that I have lived this long with this deadly illness and am enjoying myself. I’ll probably outlive some of you.

Bets are on!

It wouls not surpirse me if I die before you do, honestly im 25 but my sides are of older age.

Looking into databases some of my side effects are unfounded and not in the notes. So how does someone like me consume meds after reading the PIL knowing the effects but experincing ones that are not in books.

Rarely someone young can have 60+ years side effects and also suffer permanent damage/disfigurement from such medication

Minoxidil gave me euscian tube dysfunction, fevers, hallicinations and lymph node swells just one use of the stuff im now faced with a serious case.

My ■■■■■ is gone and I even have tinnitus to. Before meds and OTC stuff I was perfect. Just very depressed and scared to.

I almost died from pneumonia because I skipped the blood tests required when you’re on Clozaril. My fault. I also passed out once because I didn’t take the warnings seriously about RFI and pacemakers. I was installing a high-power WiMAX radio three stories up a television antenna tower. Thank goodness for the safety lanyard that I was using and that caught me. All kinds of things have risks. Heed the warnings and decide for yourself whether the value proposition is worth it for you.

Example: There’s always a risk I can blow my @$$ up at my day job, or catch on fire at the very least. I’ve read the safety data sheets for every product I use. I’ve gone through the safety training extra times, not just the one time required of me. I follow procedures carefully. I try and treat my meds the same way. I’d like to make it to 74!
