I mean mankind survived thousands of years without cell phones but I just remembered one time when one would have come in handy…
Me and my friend were in seventh grade and we had ridden our bikes about 7 miles to the mall. We spent the day there and then started the long ride back. After a couple of miles I got a flat tire. We stopped at a gas station and put air in the tire but it wouldn’t hold air. We were broke, we didn’t have a penny between us and it was 5:00 and would be dark soon and we didn’t know that particular area at all. I started pushing my bike home, I knew it would take more than an hour. We passed a 7-11 and we saw some old guy at the counter who must have been the owner. There was a pay phone booth right in front of his store so on a whim we walked in and told him it was an emergency. We told him what was going on and we asked if he could give us a dime so we could make a phone call to my parents to come and pick us up so I wouldn’t be pushing my bike in the dark on a busy street.
He looked at us and sized us up and said, “I’ll tell you what. If you pull the weeds from the walkway in front of my store, I’ll give you each a dime.” We said, sure, and went out front and there were some weeds coming up from cracks in the sidewalk. We pulled the weeds, it took about ten minutes and not only did he give us two dimes but he gave us each a Slurpee too! And I called my dad and explained the situation and he drove all the way out there and loaded our bikes in the trunk and gave us a ride back.
