They usually credit it to him. But history writing can be a tricky business.
Einstein came up with the idea that matter and energy are on a continuum. He predicted if mass traveled the speed of light it would explode into a large amount of energy.
The bomb is about nuclear fission.

I find it exceedingly ironic that the man who gave us the most destructive power in history was a committed pacifist. He wanted the bomb to be used only once and then be put on the shelf. At the height of the Cold War, Russia and the U.S. both had 25,000 nuclear warheads at their disposal.
Einstein was VERY agains t the bomb. He felt terrible about it.
I think it was Hitler that made up his mind for him.
