Autism class

They’re offering an Intro to Autism course at my university this fall. I signed up.

Here’s the description:

Dr. Allison Bean’s Introduction to Autism course (SPHHRNG 4530) provides students with an overview of autism through the lens of Health and Well-Being. This means that in addition to learning about the characteristics of autism, students take a critical look at how the social and medical disability models differ in their approach to health and wellbeing in neurodiverse individuals (including individuals with autism) and critically consider how to potentially reconceptualize evidence-based practice given that evidence-based interventions like applied behavior analysis can negatively impact the health and wellbeing of autistic people.

Are you doing this for personal enrichment, is this an elective? Or are you going into a psychology discipline? Looks interesting.

Yeah, I’m taking it out of personal interest. I like learning about autism.

I’m in another program, but I’m taking this course instead in the fall.

It sounds really interesting. I have a nephew who is diagnosed with autism.

One of my good friends has autism and i wish there was a class i could take to learn how to be a better friend to him. I find myself often getting frustrated with him and some of his behaviors, and i have to keep telling myself to be patient and kind with him since these behaviors are likely due to his autism. Still, it’s frustrating sometimes.

We get frustrated with non autistics all the same. No worries!
