Euthanasia for the Mentally Ill

Euthanasia is legal in some countries for some reasons and will probably expand to many other countries. There is a debate about allowing mentally ill people access to this service. Do you support allowing mentally ill people to euthanize themselves?

I voted yes. I want the option available to me because If I ever become treatment resistant I want out. I don’t want to be locked away in a mental institute suffering for the next 40 years. I also want a quick and humane exit.

As long as my meds work however, I would probably not access the service.

Yes i do because some people are suffering with no way out and there should be an official acknowledgement/ decision that yes this person is untreatable instead of the person having to kill themselves

Im considered treatment resistant because all my meds stop working after a few months. Considering that im really high functioning. Its not always super bad.

You’re lucky, if people want to live they should be able too. I am not advocating killing off the mentally ill, however in my case living treatment resistant would not acceptable to me.

Some states have the “die with dignity act”. I think that is more for terminally ill people though. :bear::bear::bear:

One problem would be that if you are mentally ill, for some people, are they capable of making a good decision about ending their lives? If legal suicide was available, I could see people having a bad week or a bad year and just think checking out seems like the only solution. When in reality, many people do recover to some degree.

I mean when I was first ill I suffered a lot and was suicidal many, many times. My life seemed hopeless and I had nothing and I was in a house for schizophrenics. I spent a year there sleeping on an old dirty mattress on the floor in a tiny room.

Maybe, if assisted suicide was legal back then I might have chose to end my life at age 19. But I got better. I spent another 8 months in the hospital suffering. But I got better. And ended up getting a job and going to school. And living a life. I mean when you’re in the middle of suffering and you see no light at the end of the tunnel are you really going to make a good informed decision?

Problem with this is that the same problem that causes them to allegedly have the right to do so, also clouds their judgment with regards to the wisdom of such decisions.

I believe it should be allowed for anyone to simply stop eating.

Yes I know few people that should recieve it immediately. Although im not a supporter

Yes I would like this as an option

It’s great to see the impact that changing the word from suicide to euthanasia has on people’s responses, and by great I mean disgusting. Since at least Durkheim’s classic study on suicide we have known about the importance of the cultural and socio-economic factors shaping the so called “personal” decision of ending one’s own life, and of defining what constitutes a life worth living. If suicide is often disparagingly presented as the easy way out for the individual , euthanasia would very much be the easy way out for society.

Heck no! You can’t do it for MI in my opinion. I think that is the sane approach!

I said no but I do support the euthanasia being available for people with terminal diseases. I can understand why people with mental health issues may want the option (I myself have attempted a couple of times), but I know from experience that things can improve. New drugs and treatments are being made all the time. So even someone with treatment resistance (which includes me) can have their life improved.

No, I think Euthanasia for the MI should not be an option!

Yes,It should be good, but then again, majority of people would seek for that as medical option for different conditions
But theres a catch. If you would go for it,they could always treat your wish as a symptom.
Where from there?

I don’t want the state having a list of decision I’m allowed to make and things I am allowed to do because I have a mental illness, I don’t like blanket solutions. I want the same freedoms as everyone else. I am perfectly capable of making this decision. Just because I have a mental illness doesn’t mean I am completely insane.

For now my meds work and I want to live, but I know what my life would be like if they stopped working and that life is unacceptable to me. I don’t want someone who doesn’t understand what I am going through forcing me to suffer because they think they are doing good by protecting the mentally ill.

i think it should be allowed but with good screening. I mean if you have a MI and can decide still then it should be available.
