Anyone using 5HTP?

With what did it help? Any side effects?

@Cragger I think you said you’re taking 5htp?

Don’t take it with trazodone or any drug that increases serotonin such as some antidepressants. 5HTP cauises the production of serotonin. If you take both at the same time there is a very real chance you will have too much serotonin in your brain and develop serotonin syndrome.

I tried L-Tryptophan. It’s the same deal, it’s a precursor to 5-htp. But I relapsed on it. My AP supresses serotonin, so when I raised it with a supplement I got in trouble.

However I have had better luck taking Rhodiola herb which supposedly raises serotonin if it is lower than normal, but also lowers it if it is too high. So works as a serotoin stabilizer. It is also supposed to be good for energy.

I only take one antipsychotic.

Interesting, I will take a low dose and see if I relapse.

Yeah, I’ve been using 5-HTP for years. I just take one capsule in the morning, and one at night. It seems to keep the depression at Bay 90% of the time. No side effects whatsoever for me

I should mention, you can’t take it with an SSRI type antidepressant. It will cause serotonin overload

I’ve been using 5htp 100mg twice a day for a week with abilify 10mg and invega 234mg. Seems to start working better every day.

@everhopeful just in case you need a mood boost with abilify

Did it mess up your sleep? I took 240mg/day for 2-3 days and it messed up my sleep so I stopped it.

I tried 200mg at once and it gave me more auditory hallucinations. Maybe its a sza thing. Abilify 10mg is starting to fix those however.

To build on what I said earlier I did develop serotonin syndrome. My heart rate was 110bpm for 4 days and it felt like my heart was going to beat out of my chest. I couldn’t lie down or sit comfortably for days. Things didn’t fully subside for like a month.

Be careful with supplements and drugs that increase serotonin and don’t combine them.

For mood, 5htp info is offering from 25mg with incremental dosing for two weeks and up to 100mg.
I’m going to try a extended release 100mg since I have mood swings during the day.

Serotonin is apparently bad for thought broadcasting with sza so just have get enough for stable mood

I have had nothing but good experiences with 5-HTP myself. I used to be on 375 mg of Effexor. Now I am on no antidepressant whatsoever. It works far better

Again, I have said this before. Do not take 5-HTP if you are on and SSRI type medication. SSRI medications trap the serotonin in your brain for a longerr period of time, where as 5-HTP actually raises your serotonin level. The two are a dangerous combination
