I lost a lot of weight - more than 35 lbs in probably a year - I went from weighing around 230lbs about a year ago to my current weight of 193lbs all this while taking Risperdal - a known weight gaining med.
I walk at least an hour if not more everyday and follow a low carb diet - its working.
My current psychiatrist is very health oriented - but she recently prescribed me low dose Zyprexa for my OCD/Anxiety to add on to the Risperdal.
I am very focused on my physical well being, and am proud of myself for normalizing my blood glucose levels and losing weight even on Risperdal.
Zyprexa is famous for making people fat - My current doctor thinks that if I continue to exercise and watch my diet, I can beat the weight gain and high blood sugar levels - but I am at the point in my life where I am refusing to take meds that mess up my metabolism and make me gain a lot of weight.
I am now keeping my eyes on the new AP Rexulti - its more metabolic friendly than Risperdal and not a big weight gaining med.
Any one else out there on a health kick - refusing to take meds like Zyprexa, Risperdal, Seroquel, Clozapine that wreak havoc on the body?
I am finally focusing on my physical health - I have Diabetes and really have to keep on top of things!
I’m taking 5mg of olanzapine (Zyprexa) - along with 600mg amisulpride - and was astounded to see I picked up 5 kgs from my last weigh-in. I was a healthy 65kgs, and when I last weighed myself, I was 70kgs! Considering that before I took meds at all I was 57kgs that is a big jump to 70! I don’t refuse the meds though, because they keep me sane.
Can you teach me your ways? I tried following a paleo diet with minimal carbs but I haven’t lost any weight. I do however eat 3 pieces of bacon for lunch. Could that be the reason why?
I agree, Wave. I gained 50 pounds on Risperdal. Recently it’s started affecting my heart too. I’m looking forward to Rexulti, but in the mean time I might be tried on Abilify (Rexulti’s precursor) or Latuda. Keep up the good work maintaining your health! It’s nice to know that people are beating the side effects.
Breakfast - 3 Hard boiled eggs (usually) High protein low carb
Lunch - Some Green Beans or Spinach ( a vegetable usually)
Dinner - Lean Chicken High protein, low carb (usually)
Plenty of walking - even throughout the house - nothing fancy, for at least 30 - 60 minutes if not more - you walk at your own pace - 15 minute intervals at a time if need be - total 1 hour or more throughout the day.
Plenty of water throughout the day.
Stay away from sugar and artificial sugars - avoid processed foods - eating whole or natural foods.
Go as low carb as possible - allowing for some veggies and fruit, not too much fruit (sugar)
I can’t stand depakote or zyprexa that’s what I was on and it make me eat like a horse and gain a ■■■■ load of weight. I gained a lot of weight on risperdal but luckily im able to try latuda which supposedly is better about weight gain.
Congrats on losing the weight and walking every day! I remember Risperdal was the 1st AP I tried I gained 20lbs very quickly on it. I’m currently on a healthy kick too. Just eating healthy and exercise. I can’t can’t calories or carbs, too much work and pressure to that.
I have refused meds because of the sedation and weight gain. I was on Risperdal also, not a fun medicine. I am around one hundred pounds overweight. I really need to do the same things you’re doing.
I refused Olanzapine even though it works really well for these reasons. I am now on Latuda, and hoping this is not going to be a failure like Abilify.
I will either take Geodon forever or enter remission (doubt it) or go off meds entirely and do something like I dunno try out for a PMC or get into MMA. I am not taking that weight gain sloth ■■■■. I would rather get shot. I am a ■■■■■■■ bodybuilder I am not resigning to sleeping twelve hours and being 20% bodyfat. Hell I am on a protein crash diet right now to cut off a few pounds because I bulked up and now its time to get ripped again. I took zyprexa for like two weeks and it made me lose my cut and gave me a paunch. I have seriously put on mass and now its time to cut again, I put on 17lbs and one inch on my waist in the last year. But since my core is so developed, any fat looks terrible, it’s called a power belly, its when you have such built abs that you have a thick trunk. Ive seen roid guts, HGH guts, its not that bad.
I gained about twenty pounds when they first put me on Haldol. I didn’t gain any when they switched me to Geodon and Seroquel. I gained some more weight on a blood pressure medicine, and my weight stayed at this level for a long time. I asked them to take me off this med., and they took me off it. Lately I have been walking two hours a day. I have lost 20 lbs. doing this. I need to lose more.
