I’m planning on buying some film-making equipment. It’s mostly going to be cheap digital stuff, as I’m on a very low/tight budget.
Anyone else interested in film-making? Or acting? Or anything involving film and digital video?
Take care.

I’ve never made a film or anything,
But I wish you good luck in this endeavor!
I hope you’ll post the final product!
Thank you!
My experiments in film will probably be pretty bad at first. Haha!
But if I make something decent I might post it.
I have a film degree and have made a bunch of short films. I really like Final Cut Pro, But a lot of folks enjoy adobe premiere.
Right on!
I took your advice and decided not to go to film school. I’m just going to make movies for the sake of learning how to make them.
I’ve been watching a ton of YouTube tutorials on filmmaking. It’s amazing how much free knowledge is out there!
One of the easiest and most important tricks is adjusting the black levels. I can show you an example of a picture before and after adjusting for true black, and you’ll see what I mean. Hang on.
These might not load. I’m currently out of town with spotty reception.
Before adjusting color and true black
After adjusting true black
After adjusting color balance
Hey, thanks for the tips!
And the pictures loaded fine on my end.
Oh, good! I’m glad they loaded. Yeah, when I learned the true black trick, it really made the difference in my film quality. Different shots will have different lighting, and the blacks will look various shades of gray. Adjusting them to all be the same shade helps the different shots feel like part of the same movie.
Very cool! Thank you.
Yeah, I’m planning on buying equipment over a series of a few months. This month (July) I’m going to focus on getting a decent digital camcorder that can take an external mic.
I pretty much have settled on a Canon Vixia, and a cheap mic off of Amazon.
Cheap mics are probably not worth it, in my experience. Granted, my experience is from twelve years ago, but a good mic is worth its weight. Talk to @shutterbug. He recommended me a few good mics when I was researching a few months ago. Canon makes really good and user-friendly cameras. 1080p is much better than 1080i, but I think they’re almost all 1080p nowadays.
Sounds good!
Yeah, I’m fairly certain the Canon Vixia is 1080p.
I just looked it up. It’s 1080i/60p, but that’s still pretty good, especially for just starting out.
I wish I could make film.
I have been writing a sci-fi novel that I think would be in its element on screen.
Unfortunately I have not been able to give it the time recently, but I hope one day to finish it.
How neat that you’re writing a sci-fi book!
At least for me, I think writing a book would be harder to tackle than a film.
Best wishes on finishing your book!
No skills but I think it’s a great hobby/pastime to put some time into. I grew up with people like John Carpenter making films on low budgets. So cool and inspiring if your inclined to do it.
I’d say uber cool and good luck!
Thank you @rogueone! You’re always an awesome and supportive dude.
John Carpenter is one of my favorite directors.
I was even watching “Assault on Precinct 13” the other night.
This is the way to start out, I’d say you’d be surprised what you could do with a phone camera and the right software
I recently volunteered to help make a promotional video in cooperation with media education for my clubhouse,
I was filming, on sound, interviewing and I was also filmed, I even helped with editing, the video looks really good.
We used digital cameras with different lenses, I’m supposed to be helping them film another video for teps soon saving my charity £400
I quit after “Gone With the Wind”. It was a good little movie but it burned me out and I knew I was just lucky that a few people liked it. But making it took a lot out of me.
