Anyone on benztropine/cojentin?

It’s been suggested to me that this might help relieve my constant chewing/teeth grinding. It’s been every day for quite some time now.

I used to be on it when I was on Haldol. I needed 3 mg/day. It completely stopped my issues.

Thanks @LilyoftheValley and @Natron, I was wondering if it was effective.

I was a little concerned with the reduction in saliva and the possibility of addiction if you use alcohol or drugs regularly. I was told I may even be directed to take it as needed and not daily.

I took it everyday for 2 years and was able to stop cold turkey when I switched meds

Thanks, that’s good information. Makes me feel better about taking it. Definitely can’t let the symptom go untreated, it’s getting to be quite a lot of the day.

I think it will most likely help you. If the starting dose doesn’t help, go higher. I started at 1 mg but needed to go up to 3 mg. At 3 mg, I was symptom free

I was on cogentin for nearly 40 years. I used to take it so my limbs wouldn’t get stiff. I stopped taking it during the Covid lockdown in 2021 because it made my mouth dry which makes your mouth a breeding ground for bacteria. I couldn’t go to the dentist for a year during 2021 and when I finally went I needed like four root canals and four crowns over the period to of several months.

Ended up spending well over $10,000 on my mouth with root canals, crowns and fillings. My mouth is still a little dry but it’s a lot better and I haven’t needed another root canal in more than two years.

Let me tell you benzotropin are totally safe cause I’ve used a similar drug 2 Akineton pills for 30 years.
If you are treatment resistant and on maybe 30 mgs of Zyprexa then they are totally unavoidable unless you want to run around as a totally under medicated lunatic. So give them a shot cause they are really safe.
They’ll worsen cognition but just try them.

yesh i used to take it when i was on haldol and haldol/abilify. i took it for restlessness. i need 3mg a day for it to work then it suddenly worked. dont think i had much side effects except maybe constipation but idk that coulda been from the haldol.

if u take it watch out for dry mouth. i had that at a higher dose and ended up with a lot of cavaties from that side effect,

Yeah, based on the last few statements I am more against than for it. I can’t have a worse condition in my mouth like frequent cavities or decay. I was seriously considering using it because this jaw movement is becoming an all day affair and the grinding of my teeth is not helping them either. I guess it’s a matter of which is the lesser of two evils.
Thanks everyone for your input, it’s been a great deal of help!

yes i take 1 mg every night. i dont have much eps symptoms anymore but it was prescribed due to some o used to have, which seems to come and go every few months, specifically rapid uncontrollable blinking. idk if its doing anything for me now but i seem to have normalized my sleep which i may attribute to it
