Anyone here that's had only one episode and is now medication free?

Just wondering if there is anyone on this forum who has had a diagnosis of schizophrenia and has been taken off thier medication because they became symptom free after thier first episode?

How long has it been since your symptoms stopped? I am asking because this is the situation I am in. I was advised by psychiatrists and doctor’s to avoid stress because it might lead to a relapse.

Does anyone have any advice on avoiding relapse?

I have read alot about SZ and was told by my counselor that 25 percent of people who have an initial diagnosis never have another episode. This 25 percent don’t keep seeing psychiatrists or continue taking medication which I guess is why researchers or anyone else knows that much about them? They are not really in the health system anymore for SZ treatment once they recover.

I got sz in 2003 and was sick for several years and then went into remission for five years and was off Meds in that time. I thought I was cured but then it came back in 2012. Been on Meds ever since.

Did you respond to medication the same way the second time around? Why have they kept you on meds since 2012? Is it because they don’t want another relapse? What meds are you on?

I was off meds for 2 years before I crashed and burned and ended up psychotic is hospital.

Ok but does it specially say that these people stop all meds and psych care? Or is that once on meds they never had an episode again?

I did do well on meds once I was placed on them correctly, but each time i tried to come off i got ill again and twice more had to go to hospital. I know my therapeutic dose and stay on it. I can’t afford to become ill again as I have a husband with epilepsy to look after who needs me to be there. i take amisulpride 200mg (100mg twice daily) and 2,5mg olanzapine.

So does your medication act in a preventative manner (are you symptom free, don’t have any episodes) or do you still have symptoms even while taking it?

I’m largely symptom free but I do still get intrusive thoughts and occasionally voices. Much better than off Meds but still get reminded I have sz sometimes.

if you are schizophrenic as many on here have said what happened to them when off meds…the psychosis always comes back…stop saying you don’t think you need your meds, it’s bad for others on here thinking they want to stop meds ! @hashtag385

You must take full course of treatment and also maintenance period. Some people (or most) need to take drugs lifelong. If the diagnosis of Schizophrenia is made very early(ie within 6 months) of the onset of disease and the patient gets good treatment with favorable medicines, and he also takes full course of medicines through maintenance period, relapse may not occur.
You have to adhere to the above mentioned factors to avoid relapse.
