Anyone have experience with Effexor

I might start this med. just wondering what your experience was with it.

It caused me to gain about 20lbs and the withdrawals when I quit were hell, when I missed a dose it felt like electric shocks shooting through my brain. They are known as “brain zaps”. When I quit it the brain zaps got real intense and spread through my body. I also had hot flashes and cold sweats. Withdrawals lasted about 3 months.

As an antidepressant it was so-so effective, it helped a little but my depression eventually faded away on its own like a decade ago, when that happened I quit cold turkey and had awful withdrawal symptoms.

It is considered one of the hardest antidepressants to withdrawal from.

@Headspark I had much the same experience of Effexor. The side effects were far worse than any Plus and actually I think it did nothing for my depression in my case.

I was on 375 mg at one point, and it took me eight years to wean off it. Not fun. Now I just take 5-HTP, and all is well

Wow, I can believe the 8 year thing though. I was only on 75mg but it was still hell to withdrawal from. I didn’t wean, just straight cold turkey…

I would have went cold turkey, but by day 3 I would get extremely dizzy and blurred vision. Plus I’m pretty sensitive to any meds that mess with your brain chemistry to begin with. I’ve got a pretty good balance with medication now though

It’s the only antidepressant that works for me. It’s got some serious side effects if you take a lot of it. I used to be on 300mgs but I’m down to 150 but it’s stilll the only one that works for me. Yeah. You miss a dose and you know about it…withdrawal is an issue.

I take 225 mg, and for me this has been the only anti-depressant that worked. Side effect wise - for me, it causes myoclonic jerks in my body, but not too bad. It is, however, as bad as they say if you miss a dose. I forgot to organise getting some more and hadn’t had it for 2 - 3 days, and i was about ready to kill someone. It is horrible. I think my pdoc put me on it knowing that i won’t be able to come off it easily.
