Antipsychotics can exacerbate negative symptoms because they decrease dopamine, but in some areas of the brain in sz dopamine is already too low, which is what makes negative symptoms. However they do not cause negative symptoms unless you were a typical person without a dopamine balance to begin with.
yes they absolutely can cause negative symptoms, ive read the same stories over and over again on forums and message boards, normal dude started taking risperdal or whatever, all of a sudden lingering negative symptoms. i think in many cases people notice a reduction in negative symptoms when they get off their ap or go on a lower dose, that is if they don’t completely get better. thats why we should seek the lowest effective dose.
Sups help. Omega- 3 and ginkgo biloba help me. tons more that do.
I had terrible negative symptoms before I was on any antipsychotics. They are an integral symptom of schizophrenia. The typical antipsychotic I was first on which may have worsened some negative symptoms slightly. Now on Seroquel. The negative symptoms are better now than before I was on medication.
