Can animals have schizophrenia?
I don’t think so,
They’re not sentient.
You’d have to be self aware in order to have a disorder like schizophrenia.
Animals can suffer from anxiety and depression.
Schizophrenia is exclusive to humans only.
It’s too complex of a disorder for animals.
Idk maybe dolphins could be??
Don’t dolphins hear squeaks?
I was told by my Vet one time. That dogs can have hallucinations.
I always wondered if cats and dogs could, because of them being startled by thinks we don’t see.
Cats and dogs have REM sleep. You’d probably be surprised just what they think. @GoldenRex is spot on though. Self aware is important! A cat or dog can’t figure out a mirror. A higher monkey can. I think the question is…do the greater apes suffer schizophrenia. That is probably too hard to tell!
I wouldn’t think so, i am sure they have various types of emotion and feelings but no.
If they get neglected or abused they become withdrawn and they can experience fear and thay can also experience elation (wagging tail, tongue out)
I know they rely on humans for food so they are dependent on us.
Good question. Now I’m curious to know about the greater apes. Hmm?
Octopus are capable of learned behavior. That is like the start of sentience. Very clever creatures and that is probably the start of moving forward.
Greater apes are capable of some serious stuff but there chromosomes aren’t too different from us. You mention evolution and it’s a battle round these environments but biology is so interesting!
I haven’t met a schizophrenic octopus…and I’d say that is a good thing! haha!
I’d say the disorder is unique to humans given that they think it’s a possible result of evolution gone haywire.
