A family member makes pokes at me for saying that I can’t afford ‘things.’ She told me I should ‘barter.’ I said I don’t any longer have any practical skills to barter.
She challenged me. But my cognition has suffered a lot for various reasons. I have a physical disability so I can’t do physical work. And for this reason I can’t responsibly care for children either.
I told her my doctor doesn’t want me working – just light volunteer work as I am able.
I feel hurt by her lack of understanding. Am I out of line here?
No, you’re not at all out of line. I feel the same way when I have a good day and people all of a sudden think I’m an Atlas. You just have to keep reminding them of your disability - which isn’t pleasant to have to think about, but it’s the only way. I’m giving angry replies, now, I’ve had enough.
You’re not out of line. The less you know about a problem the easier it seems to solve. This family member doesn’t seem to know much about mental illness.
My family believes that I am lazy, which is far from the truth.
They don’t understand that I suffer from significant negative symptoms and that my meds zonk me out!
I wouldn’t take it to heart @Tomasina.
Normies just don’t get it.
It’s interesting how ‘the toob’ is always ambivalent about mental illness. Sometimes they talk about the crazy bad guy as ‘psycho’ or ‘psychotic’ or 'psychopathic.
People do learn this ■■■■, and they are mixed up and think the words all mean the same.
