Addictions never go away

It’s nice weather here today.

I have an urge to go outside and drink and smoke. I wish I understood why. I’ve given up nicotine and haven’t had a drink for 11 years.

I’m not going to do it but the urge was there.

Yeah, it’s one of the reasons I delay my smoking quit. Cos i’ve quit and had the urge before, I know it’s not smart nor sensible behaviour but it’s a reality.

Some nurse told me even when you quit cigarettes you will still crave them for the rest of your life… so sucks

Yes, it’s hard, once you had the taste/feeling of a substance make you feel good . There is difference between addiction and habit. And for tabbacco smoking and alcohol aren’t substitutes.

Some people are able to free themselves from obsession but temptation always stays there.

Once an addict always an addict.

I’m addicted to certain foods, caffeine, and nicotine. I quit energy drinks and cigarettes for a year before going cold turkey. It’s expensive. I have an addictive personality, I guess. It doesn’t help that I have schizophrenia. I think I use them to cope with my condition.

Maybe sometimes it’s like a ingrained thought that links stimulants to having a good time, while in reality going out for a coffee and a bagel might be just as satisfying if not more.

I think you might be right.

90% of schizophrenics smoke. Such a huge number. I wonder if they are beneficial for SZ negatives or something. I use a vape constantly.

Smokes contain nicotinic acid which in turn is a form of vitamin B3. Vitamin B3 has been linked to being beneficial for people with psychiatric illness by some doctors back in the day. Although it seems to be disproven that vitamin B3 can cure mental disease, it can possibly mitigate it.

Actually I use vitamin B3 myself in supplement form and it is a important factor in preventing episodes in my case it seems.

If this is why smoking appeals to many people with sz I don’t know, but it’s possible, even though the amount of vitamin B3 in smokes are small compared to supplements.
