ADD & SZ(Adderall)

I’ve been diagnosed with both Schizophrenia and ADD. They prescribed me Adderall for the ADD but I’m worried it’ll interact with my schizophrenia and trigger psychosis.

Does anybody have any experience with adderall?

Who the heck prescribed you adderal? Do they know you have schizophrenia too?

Sometimes, doctors prescribe things for patients that seem like a bad idea, but end up working well. There are lots of folks here on antidepressants even though they are not usually recommended for us. They work great for those folks. Your doctor might just think this is the right combination of meds for you. Just make extra sure they know about the schizophrenia.

He knows. When i was prescribed I didn’t know to ask how it would affect my sz until i got home and looked it up.

Sometimes, when a patient has two comorbid disorders, doctors make different decisions about medications than they normally would. It’s all about a risk-benefit analysis. Maybe he decided your ADD was enough of a problem for you that it’s worth the risk of aggravating your schizophrenia to get it under control.

I took modafinal for two days and had a psychotic reaction. Which is a vigilance drug. Similar to adderall I believe. Haven’t taken adderall since I was 19 and some girl was like “HEY take an adderall”. For no reason whatsoever. That was before I became real psychotic though. That was a bad night though. But yeah stimulants and sz don’t typically mix except coffee and nicotine in moderation. I’m sure doctors will find something for you but it sounds like adhd+sz is a tricky situation.

Or listen to ninja star but be weary of your symptoms

Antidepressants aren’t bad for us since they increase serotonin. Atypical antipsychotics have the same effect.

Antidepressants are usually contraindicated for schizophrenia because they also increase dopamine, but for some people they work amazingly.

Ssri antidepressants mainly effect serotonin. If they increased dopamine they would be dris. I think wellbutrin is an antidepressant which primarily blocks dopamine reuptake but plenty of people on this forum are on it.

Yeah wellbutrin is an ndri (norepinephrine dopamine reuptake inhibitor). It may be the only antidepressant in that class.

Well, I think I’ll keep getting my advice from my doctor, who says the opposite thing. Mixing antidepressants and antipsychotics can also damage your heart, but the risk is worth it for some people.

I used to take wellbutrin. My doctor took me off for one reason or another i can’t remember. This was before my sz diagnosis.

I have SZ and have been taking Zoloft (can be anti-depressant) and Seroquel (anti-psychotic) for a synergistic effect. It’s a combination that helps (at least in my case) concentration and energy level. If I take Seroquel without the Zoloft I notice a significant decrease in concentration capability and energy level.

The only downside could be that Seroquel makes me sleep a lot, but I actually consider that a good thing because … I need to recharge anyway and minimize “overload” from day to day.

I think synergy is something patients may want to look into, that is if your doctor hasn’t already looked into it.

I have a LOT of experience with Adderall. Several years-worth. And as much as I’d like to say “your doctor knows best,” Adderall and delusions/hallucinations mixed have led to some of the most horrific things I’ve ever experienced. Adderall is what led to my first psychotic break, and I’m surprised that your doctor prescribed it. Not to mention the contrandiction between the medications. I would be very wary if I was in your shoes. Stimulants are bad news, I learned that the hard way.
