I think this whole process is so worthwhile for our community so as a reply to another thread I think it’s worthwhile sharing my opinion on it!
I only once did a keto diet. Lost a lot of weight but it was difficult as it was very low calorie as well.
I struggled with dizziness.
Don’t think I have the motivation to try it again. I struggle with too strict diets.
Yeah it’s different but I stumbled upon it whilst doing lo fat. It just clicked and my shrink got me onto it so I had a bit of discipline into it.
I think that is the problem. I think it works amazing if you do it but I’m loose as a goose when it comes to it. If I’m restricted to 37 or less of net carbs a day I’m going to the limits most times. But I don’t go over much. It becomes second nature and I can eat things the same everyday so a good staple is like bacon and eggs for breakfast.
The thing is. It was amazing for the weight loss. That is a no brainer but as a pretty high functioning ( in some respects and not others) sz person after about 6 months I’ve had some crazy good gains with cognition.
Like increased motivation. Increased boredom and looking for new things to do and having the power to do them. Less positives. I still get intrusive thoughts and paranoia but it’s changed ever so slightly and it’s subtle but real…
Like don’t get me wrong. I’m far from a complete human being and still struggle with things but the results are enlightening and I’m improving over time on the lowest clinical doses of my psych meds…
I’m not so strict these days and not sure of the health benefits long term of staying in ketosis but lo carb is helping me thrive after a year of doing it…and yes. I’m older but the improvement has been pretty bloody good.
You’re looking really good these days @rogueone. We are about the same age I believe. And I really need to shed about 35 pounds of fat. That diet still sounds interesting. How’s your cholesterol doing with this high fat diet?
I was on statins for high cholesterol before the dieting thing. Doing the lo carb/keto thing my blood work is good. Like my diet before hand was pretty rubbish so dieting I’ve improved a lot and I pay more attention to eating healthy even on the higher fat diet.
So. I think i eat a lot healthier now anyways and it’s a big improvement over my pre diet routines.
Keto is good, I’ve tried it, very good for weight loss.
But I’ve shifted to moderate carbs/less protein.
I’m kinda always been compassionate for vegans, when you think about the universalism of meat industries. Won’t go into details buts it’s an endless cycle of pain, suffering, death
Edit: just realized I posted few mins ago about buying a ton of steaks tomorrow. Scratch that haha
Accomplishing pretty much the same on the Mediterranean Diet. I’m on a super low dose of Vraylar and I feel good. I have a lot of fun doing things most days. Unprocessing my diet has also really helped. I avoid almost all premade foods now. I may have cheat days where I get a meal out, but it is not fast food and I never cheat with frozen, premade food.
Life can be pretty good.

My PCP doesn’t want me on keto and said if I went keto I should get no less than 90 net carbs
My sister pushes keto. I was in a weight loss program for six months that had a diet very similar to keto, but I still gained weight. I was never encouraged to cut my meds, but the ones I’d most like to cut are things like the propranolol. My cholesterol is also getting up there, and while I’m not on meds for it, I’d love to lower those numbers. When/if I get my bariatric surgery, the diet is high protein and fiber.
It’s not for everyone but as someone who has come out the other side there really is something to it. It’s not a miracle cure or anything but it’s got some decent cognitive benefits for mental health and sz in particular.
Yeah any dieting is good if it works but your a curious specimen and what I’m saying is that keto/lo carb in particular has some pretty good implications for the community. Mediterranean is great for some but the mental health aspect is the curious thing…not dissing your experience and your looking good. For most of the community the keto is worthwhile looking at…it’s the long term where mediterranean is probably more sustainable.
It works for weight loss but you need to be disciplined like any diet. You can track your calories and your food with trackers these days. You can use free ones on your phone and dial in your food intake to pretty serious levels. If your gaining weight on keto your not doing it right from my experience but I’d add…exercise helps get you into ketosis and all diets are helped by exercise. They really are.
Any proper diet has pretty good implications for us. I am very tired today, please don’t make me drag out links.
I’ve been keto since about March. I made the mistake of playing my own doctor and coming off my meds way too fast and coming off meds that really helped me. Thought that ketogenic was going to cure me and I could be completely off my meds. It’s also made my bulimia worse because of how restricted the keto diet is, like I just had a binging episode, which is like a major problem for me
Yeah it’s not for everyone and sorry you came off the pills. It’s seductive as I think I could go subclinical but I don’t. All diets are restrictive and it’s the major problem with them. I think the more research they do they’ll get to pills simply to take advantage of the diet interactions. There’s definitely something to it as I have been doing it all a year but I have hacked it to suit my needs.
Agreed. And with exercise plays a huge role in that. Just from personal experience the lo carb is the difference to way better mental outcomes. I was doing similar before it and doing shed loads of exercise…There really is something to it and I think it is worthwhile persuing over time for many people here.
It gets bad press and the lunatic fringe but there’s movements in the medical field over all this but research takes time. Yeah keto has negative outcomes over time it seems but if you really look at it so do meds. I’m not saying it will replace your meds because it just isn’t that but as something that will improve your life by helping you lose weight and do that particularly well the other health outcomes become so much more apparent.
Also. I think it’s important in my experience to say I did this specifically via diet and changing habits and eating patterns. I didn’t have any help with medications for weight loss.
