Abilify withdrawal

Have just discovered and signed up for this forum and hope it’s full of positive learning. I gradually tapered off Abilify a few years ago, am back on now, and I wrote and independently published a book (titled ‘Asylum’ and available as an eBook via Amazon or in paperback through my website) about the experience. Not suggesting here anybody should go buy it, although they could if they wanted to, rather, I’m curious to know about others’ experiences with Abilify (or other neuroleptics) and coming off. It was disastrous for me, and I’m fairly certain most others who’ve tried coming off would say the same. I’d love to hear your stories and any thoughts or opinions!

I got a substantial increase in physical strength from Abilify. It got me a little too agitated, though.

It’s tough coming off of APs including Abilify.

Welcome to the forum!

I didn’t have any trouble with abilify or risperdal but did with Zyprexa. Zyprexa to the point I couldn’t take the transition + went back on it.

I’ve never experienced withdrawals coming off an AP (Abilify included), or any other med. The only things that have ever caused me withdrawals have been nicotine and alcohol.

How about rebound psychosis or relapse?

If you suffer with a psychotic disorder like schizophrenia and you stop taking your AP, you can relapse - certainly.

I was somewhat tapered off of Abilify, took half tablets the last week or two, because I could no longer get free samples (had no insurance at the time) after the generic came out a couple years ago. I was fortunate enough not to suffer a relapse as a result. I had some worsening after about a year off of APs, had to be admitted into a hospital again and was put on Zyprexa (2016). I couldn’t tolerate much Zyprexa, due to akathisia, so I got put on Aristada shots, which I was able to get through a patient assistance program. Same with the Abilify Maintena shots I get now.
