A rant about world hunger

One thing that really makes me mad is when people talk about people starving to death in Africa like they somehow bring their suffering onto themselves by not having enough initiative to take action that would alleviate their hunger. No one would go through the pain of starvation if they had alternatives. Some of them might have to walk a hundred miles to an aid station to get food, and by the time they get there the food is gone, and all that effort has cost them dearly in the calories they need to sustain their bodies. That kind of self righteous indignation that starvation is a self inflicted condition makes me sick.

yes, there’s a Police the band song that says, “too many cameras and not enough food”…stuck in my head…it’s publicized as everyone knows but still it remains…and then don’t get me started about the hungry children in poverty in the US.

We have so much wasted food education is a basis to keeping kids from starving I do believe they should starve a little and I wanted to know what starvation is about and then from there on they should never start again respect the food and the food will respect you

I never hear that people are blaming starving people for their starving. Maybe you have though. The reason I usually hear about starving people is the country or the area they’re in. And a lot of times it is because of natural causes like drought or frost or rain washing away the crops or something. The only time I used to hear about “starving people in Africa” is during the 1960’s or 1970’s and mother’s would tell their kids to clean their plate because there’s starving people in Africa.

I have heard a couple talk like this. One was a comedian on tv. Africa has been suffering from famines for as long as I remember. Today, Yemen is on the verge of mass starvation, with thousands of children in dire need of protection before it is too late.

Food charity to the third world actually kills the agricultural sector for those particular staples. Local farmers can’t compete with free.

Third world is f*cked. Stop looking.

I would want to look into that more thoroughly before I formed a solid opinion on it. There are a lot of instances where a population has been displaced, and they don’t have the resources to grow their own food, like in Yemen. They are on the brink of mass starvation. I don’t think our help is going to displace their agricultural sector. It would be only in a few instances where famine relief displaces agricultural infrastructure, if there would be any at all. A lot of that kind of rationalization for doing nothing about mass starvation sounds to me like a knee jerk reaction to any guilt we might have about not helping those in danger of starving.

Your worries do nothing at all for them.

If you are worried about homeless people try volunteering in a soup kitchen. Big karma and you will have lots of stories from it.

I donated about $300 or more to help palestinians fight hunger and poverty…it was most of my first stimulus check…im pretty sure it went directly to them…but I got attacked by people saying that I was supporting “terrorism” its hard to help people in those situations…sometimes the services dont go directly to the people, or there is such a dire political situation that its complicated…

my mom advised me to stop talking to them, even though she has volunteered through amnesty international to visit Gaza as a peace activist…she said that its a complicated situation and to be careful…that it was a good thing I did but that I shouldn’t send anymore money after that…

Its good that you are compassionate…but it really is hard for one person to make a difference on their own. Like in Afghanistan, I think it would be nice if the US sent extra aid because they are on the verge of mass starvation…and the US did leave…so sending help with food security and hospitals…

being overly concerned about third world issues pushed my mom’s mental illness over the edge…it can be an unhealthy preoccupation to be concerned with things beyond your control…its something the government needs to work on and systemically improve…
