A question for those who have quit smoking

How did you do it? I don’t think I’ll ever be able to quit. I always think things will get only worse if I don’t have my nicotine.

It just feels like the world’s ending everyday for me. So I tell myself “why not?”

Maybe if I had a girlfriend or wife, and a child that would give me more incentive.

I have been smoke free in 7 years or more now… things that helped me was Nicorette QuickMist

Congrats! Is that a nicotine inhaler?

You realy have to WANT to quit. I drew up a list of all the bad things about smoking and repeated it comstantly for about a month before I stopped. I also used Zyban…how much that helped in my effort to quit I do not know. I smoked for 18 years heavily especialy when I use to drink. It is now almost 10 years since I quit.

Awesome @anon18305065 on your recovery ! Yeah, I guess that’s the problem with me. A lot of people want me to quit, but I am not sure if I want to, or if I’m ready.

I quit July 26th of this year using the patch and the gum. I’m done with the patch and still using the gum. My primary said if I need to use the gum for a year there’s no harm in that. I honestly didn’t want to quit. I tried multiple times and nothing worked. I did read Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Quit Smoking. While the book didn’t help me quit it helped my mindset to know the world wouldn’t end if I didn’t have cigarettes.

Probably what did it this time was doing it for my mom. She has a lung disease, not smoking related, and the doctor said the second hand smoke from my clothes was harmful to her. There are so many down sides to smoking. I’m glad I quit. Good luck! :sunny:

I wasn’t ready to quit nor did I want to. I just did it. My state’s quit line helped me too. If you wait for the motivation you’ll die waiting. :sunny:

I tried many times to quit. It mostly lasted for a day. One time I stopped for three weeks then started again. There never is a “good” time to quit. We will always have stress. I am so happy that I was finally able to quit.

Thank you all for the positive motivation.

I quit cold turkey 4 1/2 years ago. No patches, no gum, just sheer determination. It sucked a lot but I just kept at it and eventually it was over. My trick was to get angry with myself any time I felt like smoking. I’d yell at myself in my head, like a drill sergeant, until the craving went away.

That’s amazing you and @far_cry0 have such willpower to do it cold turkey. I really wish I could do it that way but I will probably go buy the patch and some gum fairly soon.

I smoked for about 50 years, but I’m stopped now. I was a heavy smoker, but I’ve had no nicotine in my body for greater than two years.

I used the five D’s: drink water, delay, distract, discuss, deep breath.

I still chew straws.

I’ve been off real cigarettes and using an ecig for about 2 years now (I’m not sure I’ve lost count). It’s getting to the point where I’d like to quit the ecig too.

Makes sense. From what I’ve read about e-cigs they’re designed more to get people off nicotine, not keep them on it.

I wish you the best!

Good luck. I cut back on cigarettes by chewing nicotine gum. I can go weeks without a cigarette. When I give in and buy 1 pack I do not chasticize myself, just vow that it won’t lead to a 2nd pack. Over 2 years time chewing nicotine gum I reduced my smoking 95%. Maybe one day I’ll be free from the gum too, but it’s a slow process.
