A gnawing hunger

that refused to be recognized. When I was alone, I didn’t know enough to eat.

Do you mean that you would forget to eat even when you were hungry?

I’m sorry I didn’t make that clear. I had learned to suppress hunger and am only recently feeling the gnawing pain when it’s time to eat. Mother was too run down to feed us well.

When I was in the board & care home about four years ago we had a large trash can in the kitchen. It was where everybody cleaned their plate into after they finished eating.

I used to go in the dining room and do my homework late at night and the other residents would wander in and dig through that garbage for food that had been sitting there for seven hours. It was gross of course and It was like looking into someone’s psyche to see people eat rotten, decayed food like animals.

Some of the rules for homes are just too rigid. They should allow residents to have a bag of hard candies or something else in their rooms.

I ate and drank in my room all the time.

They weren’t really too strict about it though it was against the rules. We had a 7-11 right next door but people were broke. I loaned money when I could though I was in debt.
