Does anyone know if I can work 3 months of a 9 month trial work period, then switch off of the trial work period and keep my earnings under SGA? Or does anyone know how that would work?
I could probably get a job that would be union. So for the first 3 months I wouldn’t be in the union, but post 3 months I would be in the union and would have more flexibility about maximum work hours.
They aren’t much help. The guy that was handling my case would never call me back.
You just have to report starting or stopping work. I didn’t turn in my pay stubs until I worked 9 months and they counted 10 and said my disability ended and we’re going to take me off.
I had to call them and tell them they counted wrong and a few weeks later they reinstated me.
I am in the extended period of eligibility where if I make less than SGA I still get my check but I make more than that so they stopped my benefits. But this extended period of eligibility is only 36 months.
SGA is like $1350. But if you make less than like $850 it doesn’t count as a trial work month. You can make under that all you want. Those numbers are approximate. You can ask them the hard numbers when you call tomorrow.
I think @77nick77 makes close to SGA every month and hasn’t been taken off. I am not sure how he does that though so the rules are sketchy.
Good luck.
What kind of work are you going to be doing?
I work for the government and I am in a Union too.
The rules can be confusing. I first went on SSDI in the eighties. I was also somehow on SSI. I dropped SSI somewhere down the line but I
don’t even know the year.
I’ve been through 9 month work trials, and a 14 month work trial. Were talking about over thirty years of collecting benefits and being employed at the same time. My jobs change, I quit or get fired or just walk out and never go back or don’t report for 3 days and never call and they let me go. But I’ve also succeeded at some jobs and last three or four years! My employment record is kind of spotty and checkered but overall, I’m usually a good employee.
I’ve been working over 30 years and collecting benefits but I don’t know for sure how SSDI works or how I get it for so long. But I’ve been through multiple trial work periods and annual reviews by Social Security and they have a record of all my jobs and exactly how much money I made over the years and of course they can pull up at their leisure the record of how much SSDI I have collected.
They make the rules not me, lol. So the ball is in their court. The last dealings I had with them was about 7 years ago and this is how it ended up. This is what my situation is. And I have checked and double checked and asked questions and asked specifics. And you may not believe it but this is what I’ve been told and like I said, I’ve double checked this and this is how it’s worked since 2011. A couple of workers told me that I can work and earn up tp about $1200 a month. You mentioned the abbreviation “SGA” There’s a name for the amount they let you earn but it escapes me. But it is something that other people get too, not just me.
Basically, they told me I can earn that amount forever and as long as I don’t earn over that amount I can collect SSDI forever. It sounds like a small child told me this, right, lol? This is how I live. As an added bonus, about 5 years ago they told me that I don’t have to send them pay stubs every month like I did for years. They make the rules, it’s a sweet deal and I ain’t going to rock the boat.
