Suicide and schizophrenia

This abstract defines the demographic associations with suicidality in schizophrenia.

The essential issue was defined a few years before this paper was published, and the paper (I’ve read it) points to it. Building on earlier work by Albert Ellis, an American researcher named Martin Seligman developed a concept called “learned helplessness” in relation to biogenetic predispositions.

LH is a system of delusional – but seemingly realistic – beliefs that influence appraisal of new phenomena. (Ellis had observed quite a few of the essential, delusional beliefs in the '50s and '60s.) Seligman (and others) found that to the degree LH is successfully treated with cognitive-behavioral psychotherapies, LH can be decreased.

But the truly “magic bullet” for suicidality was developed in the 1980s by Marsha Linehan in Seattle. Dialectical Behavior Therapy has proven to be The Best Therapy there is for LH in semi-psychotic, borderline, PTSD-tortured, anxiety-saturated, and hyper-depressed pts. And preliminary research indicates that it works as well as anything else out there at least on pts with psychotic diagnoses.

Thanks. I will search the terms you wrote here.
