Coluracetam and Schizophrenia

Many different animal models have been developed to simulate symptoms of schizophrenia. One such model uses subchronic administration of phencyclidine (PCP) to simulate schizophrenia’s effects on motor response. In experimental studies, PCP was found to reduce acetylcholine (ACh) in the striatum, which is thought to be characteristic of the brains of schizophrenics. In order to treat this effect, drugs that stimulate the release of ACh in the brain are of interest. One such drug is coluracetam.
