It is in the news recently. It seems that nobody cares about free speech anymore. Even college campuses don’t like free speech anymore from what I heard. There are conservative commentators that have been banned. Of course I’m saying this on a platform that typically blocks people but I felt I needed to say it somewhere. Some people don’t believe in the bill of rights… I’m not saying the mods don’t that is not the purpose of what I am saying.
The freedom of speech was never protected. There was a time when people were arrested for saying the F word.
I don’t know maybe I’m imagining a world where people can say whatever. Maybe free speech never existed. I was told that it did and needed to be protected.
Taboos and social norms change through the generations
All my rap videos would have to be censored if this is actually happening. Especially guys like YG, Vince staples etc.
I think the wording that everybody talking about it was using was religious and controversial or something like that. Also someone like jordan b peterson was censored. Maybe it will hit rap too @eduvigis . I was more worried about political commentary. These days it seems like they only censor one point of view. Of course since I watch videos on that point of view that viewpoint could be skewed.
Youtube has its left-wing political agenda:
Where does the right to say anything you want however vile and morally reprehensible end and the right to free speech begin ?
For example some might call the right to troll - free speech , but surely people have the right not to be trolled by other people and treated decently?
You have the right to say whatever you want in public and your home. But once you are in someone else’s domain, the people who own the building make the rules. The same works with YouTube. They own the servers you put your content on. So they get to refuse service to whoever they want.
Also I agree with firemonkey. Trolling =/= freedom of speech. Using speech to insight riots is still illegal.
Our speech has always been censored. Our press has always been censored too. You have the right to say, write and record whatever you want in the privacy of your own home and that’s about it.
Speech breaks down into public and private speech, but even public speech has 9 categories that are not protected by the 1st Amendment. Also, each judge may interpret the 9 exceptions differently.
This website is private. Before we joined this website we had to agree to abide by the Community Guidelines and Terms of Use. The Community Guidelines are basically what we can and cannot say, and the Terms of Use is basically a legal document. For instance, if we say something that falls under the 9 categories of speech that are not protected by the 1st Amendment (illegal speech), the owners of this website are indemnified (they are protected from legal action).
Where do you draw the line though? Some people would call conservatives trolls. But they are like 20% of the voting population. At what point does it just become censorship? A topic that some conservatives would talk about for example is the higher rate of terrorism among islamists. (I know I heard the argument that it is actually white christians that are doing everything but what I looked at seemed to fall apart when they counted everything as an attack by white christians to fudge numbers. ) Leftist would label that argument as hate speech and against people of islam or racist. So a perfectly valid political argument gets censored. There is no dialogue.
I get what you are saying it still is a private company. So they would still be in the right if they were supporting nazis. The argument is should they.
The liberals who objected to conservative rhetoric used to be called knee-jerk liberals.
It’s whatever the people agree on.
As for everything else, I don’t follow politics because you can’t verify anything they say in the news or whatever pundit you follow. So you never know if they are right and you just listen to them anyway for no good reason. Meanwhile it’s changing your attitude and point of view but you have no good reason to believe what you do.
It is certainly an ongoing discussion in America and other countries. “When dies free speech become hate speech?” Obviously YouTube feels that it is when you start to associate a large culture if people with the act itself.
Also if you get enough people yelling at each other, eventually someone is going to throw a punch, shoot a gun…drop a bomb…
There was always this culture of people though and they were thought to not even be fit for tv. What the problem is when a group of people say “this is mine, this is yours, stay out of mine” it becomes a problem. So YouTube, like others before it, has to say “this is mine, this is yours, you can have some of mine, if anyone says you can’t have any then they can’t have any”
To be frank, YouTube started this when the Wallstreet Journal ran a smear campaign on YouTube’s most subscribed person PewDiePie. They cherry picked pieces from 6 months worth of videos he uploaded to attempt to make him look like a nazi. Then the Wallstreet Journal took the piece they made to corporations who run ads on YouTube to which the ads were pullef. This was called the “ad-pocalypse” where YouTube lost millions of dollars. In response to this, and to prevent similar outcomes (which tends to happen in these kinds of things) YouTube started going to the way of demotization of videos that were considered “controversial” or otherwise get more ads pulled. So if you want to blame anybody, blame the Wallstreet Journal.
I know. Sometimes they say opposite things about a subject but they both use reputable sources. It would be a full time job just to go through it all. Also I believe that many people who are political become almost brainwashed into believing their side(hopefully not me but maybe). For example people didn’t care that much about trans people until the left made it a political statement to do so. Now everybody seems to think that calling someone the right pronoun is equivalent of a person not getting the right to vote or something.
Used to respect the wallstreet journal. Now if I ever get money I will never buy their product. It was a total hit piece they didn’t even ask to hear his side or anything before they tried to hit his wallet. The wallstreet journal should’ve fired the journalist that did it on purely a business decision. Now at least 55 million people(around pewdiepies suscriber count) will refuse to buy their product because they knew that it was based off of nothing.
They may be reputable but that doesn’t make the sources accurate on any statistical basis.
Plus on a general basis in the media, a lot of things get “dramatized” for a lack of a better word. They use short, emotion inducing words to get you to listen more. And in the process of all this dramatization, facts get lost, words become misinterpreted by the audience, ect. Now whether they use this as an opportunity to manipulate the citizens or if they do it by mistake, because nobody fact checks them and they don’t do it to themselves, is what I wish people really focused on instead of assuming everyone is out to get them.
Did you watch the original videos they took from? He was clearly making fun of the actual nazis. There was even a video where he found people making swastikas in a game with his name on it were he flat out said no, stop doing this. There was no joke to that, he was dead serious about it.
The people who are against free speech now are the same people who were so passionate about the right of free speech when they were doing their own protesting. What these people are telling us is that they know all the answers, they alone know the truth, and they’re willing to use violence to prevent people from disagreeing with them. That is the formula for tyranny. This hostility to freedom of speech scares me.
