Would you shoot someone attacking you in self defense?

I don’t really know if I could shoot someone intending to do me bodily harm. I’m too crippled up and walk with a cane to try and flee now. My conscious would really bother me if I killed someone even in self defense. Thinking about it now maybe I could wack them with my metal cane and possibly stop them.

I’m mainly concerned about standing at the bus stops alone.

I 100% don’t want to hurt anyone, but I’d much rather work the trauma out with my therapist than have my family work out my funeral arrangements.

Also, I’d be careful with these threads mate. You were warned about threads bordering on political topics, and it’s not my place to keep you on point, I just don’t want to see you banned as you’re a valued member.

Are you super nervous about something? This has come up a lot recently. I’m guessing something is on your mind that is causing you stress and fear.

I don’t want to hurt anyone either. We have a serial killer here stabbing people to death, mainly older men. He stabbed a homeless man to death recently I believe.

One older woman he stabbed survived and gave police a description. I think she was stabbed something like 10 times. This is like right out of the Hitchcock movie Psycho.

Damn, I don’t blame you for being on alert. I don’t know your situation so I can’t give advice about firearms and this isn’t the forum for it, but there are non lethal self defense options out there. Look into stun guns and tazers, as they vary in law by state, as well as pepper spray. Also, get a nice flashlight that is at least 300 lumens. Flashlights are the most underrated yet one of the most effective self defense tools.

Well, that must mean I started it.

No you didn’t start it @77nick77. This serial killer been at it for maybe a year now.

I agree with squanchy. A history of depression, suicidal ideation and schizophrenia is not a combination I would think would mix well with gun ownership, even if you find out it is legal for you to possess.

I can’t tell you what to do, but if you are worried about self defence, why not consider other options?

We are all concerned about your recent obsession with looking into gun ownership, considering the history you have shared of suicidal ideation. What happens if you slip into that stupor again?

No - I would not want to live with the trauma of surviving a shooting.

Thanks @Bowens I not going to get a gun if I’m by myself. That’s only if my friend should possibly show up. But then I wouldn’t need a gun if there’s two of us at the bus stop

Oh that’s good. You have mentioned that before, but your recent looking into your involuntary committal had us concerned you were on the hunt for one again.

Seriously mate, get a flashlight. I carry an Olight baton 3 capable of 1200 lumens in bursts. 300-350 is enough to distract an attacker for a bit, and good enough to light up a dark ally. I always recommend a flashlight to learn and use for defense, with pepper spray being next. The thing about guns is that the majority don’t take the time to be proficient enough to be considered responsible, but pepper spray can be learned relatively quick, with considerably less risk to those around you. There are legitimate self defense tools that don’t require a gun that make would be attackers not even want to deal with the hassle you would bring.

This isnt appropriate for chat in my opinion on a mental health site.

Hey @Bowens there’s an objection to this thread. Please close.

Why not forget about guns for awhile? It seems to be on your mind constantly. If your friend happens to show up with his guns then maybe you need to look into the legal ramifications of having them in your possession. Until then, if you are worried about your safety, there are lots of non lethal means you can look into where you don’t risk your own life or someone else’s. As I said, I can’t tell you what to do, but I hope you will at least take this into consideration.
