Would you give up your financial independence?

If you got less scrutiny from the disability benefit department? Basically left alone by the benefits department (DWP in my case)

But you have no control over your money. You get a allowance per week (£140) - They pay all utilities. You have to go and ask for money to do anything you want like go on vacation. They can legally say no to your requests. But you’ll always be granted disability benefits?

Well, if you’re asking if I would personally, to be honest, the answer is “no”. But you are not me. Maybe it is best for you if you are not able to be responsible with your money on your own.

I guess some of it would depend on how willing those in charge of your money are to be reasonable about giving your cash when you need it. There are lots of factors play, and I don’t think that I know you or your situation well enough to make that decision for you. It may be the best thing for you in your situation, IDK.

I already have an appointee that manages my disability benefits.

Basically if I don’t give up my 4 credit cards and £1000 overdraft which I’ve had for 5+ years with minimum debts (Apart from asking appointee for money to pay off credit cards ‘sometimes’ which I can afford) Social services are going to seek a Deputyship on me. They as appointees don’t like me having credit lines.

Now I have two choices, get conformation that I do have capacity to manage my finances (which I failed the last capacity assessment last December) and mange my own money but possible lose my benefits as they’ll think I’m too able and shown improvement.

Let them go through with the Deputyship, lose all my rights and independence, have to ask for permission for money to do things. maintain benefits.

I have a housemate in the group home who has less disabilities than me and he manages his own money and he’s on the highest rates of benefits.

I’m just scared that if I lose the appointee that manages my money I’m going to lose my benefits

What would you do?

I think if I remember correctly, you have had issues with spending your money before.

I think in your case, if it guarantees your benefits, I would go ahead and let them go through with the Deputyship.

It’s a tough call, but I think that is the safest play in your situation.

Again, however, if you are asking what I would do. I would try to get confirmation that I have capacity. I’m just not sure, based on your history of spending, that what I would do and what you should do are the same things.

My best daily living skill is budgeting. I’ll spend more some months than other months, but I’m not in debt. I still get disability benefits.

I think if I keep my bank cards in the staff office in my draw and have support to help me manage money that would just be as good as having an appointee in the eyes of the DWP.

I might add when I sent my assessment form back it was written much about the appointee. But I feel it played a big part in me getting PIP.

The real question is why are they suddenly seeking this if you already have someone managing your money?

It doesn’t make sense out of the blue. Something triggered it.

Because I have credit cards and booked so far 5 vacations this year which I can afford but they feel they can’t help me manage money if I don’t ask them first and go behind there back. Plus they really don’t like me having read cards.

Also I failed the last capacity assessment in Dec 2020.

5 vacations? And credit cards? How in the world can someone on benefits justify that?

I get quite a lot of money with minimal outgoings.

I can’t begin to understand that. Here and as far as I know, elsewhere, if someone is on benefits they barely skate by. I know two people that are disabled here and get such a tiny amount they can’t afford anything.

I’m from the U.K. and benefits are generous here. I didnt fill the form out, my social worker did and I got maximum benefits which on asking my appointee is £1500 a month and my outgoings are £330 a month this including food. I get my housing paid in full by the government. I have little outgoings.

I may have to apply for U.K. citizenship. :stuck_out_tongue:

I wouldn’t want to lose my independence with the money.

Also with Deputyship - this means court of protection.

Means that if I get seriously ill they can force treatment on me even without a community treatment order in place.

I think he’s one of the lucky ones. I get around 330 pip and esa… nowhere near as much as @bobbilly nor housing which is why i am stuck at home with my mum.

I know many people who get the same as me. One is is Florida now for a 2 week all-inclusive holiday with his friend who he paid for.

I gave up my financial independence by being put on SSI in the US. I’ve never done it but I’ve heard getting married does the same thing.

I feel that it’s great if you get to travel, I haven’t been able to go much recently because of COVID and no job but I had plans to go Grenada when I was working so might be going this year. Enjoy the travel. Where you going?
