As you may know, I am dirt poor. I drive a POS car, live with my dad, coffee is my only joy etc.
so, after not having a massage in YEARS, I decided I would go to one of the schools and get a student massage for cheap. It may be cheap to them, but it is real money to me. I paid $50 to treat myself to a ‘once in years’ 90 minute massage.
It was HORRIBLE! He hardly rubbed me at all and instead dug with his fingers and pinched me. I don’t know WTF he was trying to accomplish but it was PAINFUL. I said "less pressure’ many times but it just kept hurting. I used to have massages regularly back in the day when I had more money so I know a good massage. He finished it off by pulling my hair in what was supposed to be a scalp massage.
Words can’t xpress how bad it was. It was SO bad it makes me think my delusion is real and that I was on candid camera.
Sucks since I really can’t afford to do that very often.
I went for massage Indian head massage and it was painful
She dug her fingers in really hard and said it would make me feel better after
I never go her again
ahh that’s terrible… I thought to massage you found the bunched up tight muscles and used your palm to relieve the tension by apply small amounts of pressure from the source outwards… Im unsure as ive never taken a class but my gf would punch me if I used the iron finger technique to assault her back with…
I would agree with you and also add that this massage was specifically to relax not to loosen anything or cure some sports tightness. Simply to r…e…l…a…x
and that did NOT happen. I was tense and waiting for it to be over the whole time. Bummer for me
Sorry I’m in the minority but you should have spoken up more and asked for what you wanted. The masseuse has no idea what it feels like and if you don’t tell them it hurts then they don’t know. What type of massage did you ask for? That may have been it… There are different types of massages, some easier others more intense.
You were a paying customer and you should’ve complained. $50.00 is a lot of money! You could still go back or call and let them know what your experience was. Most businesses want to please customers…
I got my husband a couple’s massage a few years ago as a birthday gift. It was horrible. I don’t like being touched by strangers, so it didn’t matter whether the guy was good or not. He might as well have been punching me… I don’t get my hair cut or my nails done either. The touching feels intrusive.
I hope you’ll go back though and maybe they’ll give you a free or further discounted massage with someone else.
My close friend went to massage school and is certified. The thing is…a lot of masseuses are not certified. Was yours certified? That means they’ve been through a jr college to get hands-on training (haha pun! get it hands on?!) and they have to complete like 40 hours of interning or something.
She’s massaged me and it was a pleasant experience UNTIL she did deep tissue massage I was like TOO HARD and she said deep tissue was supposed to be hard, but what you’re describing just sounds like some jerk who didn’t want to work.
she taught me how to give massages (minus deep tissue, basic Swedish massage) and what you described would have gotten me yelled at by my friend! I give her massages now and then when she’s sore from her sport. when I gave massages, it was very physically demanding. you have to use right amount of strength to get the right pressure. Also, you have to concentrate on the person’s body tension to see if the pressure is too much or too little (good masseuses can feel you tense up from pain and will lighten pressure), the amount of physical movement is taxing…it sounds like that guy was a lazy jerk who didn’t want to work for his pay.
Can you check reviews online next time? Or call ahead and ask what kind of massages they give and if they’re certified, if you ever try it again? That might help filter out some of the bad seeds. Also, some of those massage parlors are just fronts for seedy adult business, so make sure they’re legit by doing a google search on the business.
My town just cracked down on massage parlors in my neighborhood, guess they were just fronts.
@skims I probably should have said more. Having said that, I have had countless (literally can’t count) massages and whatever this was I don’t know. I said over and over less pressure and he just ignored me. Also whatever “technique” he was using (pinching and poking) is something I have never experienced. It was truly, truly weird and while I should have said more, I doubt we would have landed on the same page at any point. After all, what I DID say, he ignored. I decided I would gut it out and never go back.
@Hedgehog you’re right. I am a pu*ssy. I hate making a fuss. I just take my lashings (literally) and say nothing. That’s on me. They did give me a review to fill out with the massage therapist sitting right there while I filled it out and collecting it from me (odd, seems people are more likely to be honest if it is anonymous) and I did indicate it was much too hard.
At the end of the day it was the strangest and most painful massage I have ever had out of probably over a hundred I have had in my life. It’s a shame because I am so damn poor I won’t be able to do it again for some time.
