Seems we had a visitor last night about 300’ from the house…This is a large animal! 4" paw prints. I would love to see it…most Coyote tracks I see are smaller…
Seems the Creature was stalking a Deer as there were a few deer tracks widely spaced (jumping) near these.
To my knowledge there are no wild wolves around here. Coyotes, there are lots of them… but this is big, like a wolf…
Wolf
Wolves usually walk or trot in an alternating pattern (See Track Patterns), but may trot in a two-print pattern or lope in a four-print gallop pattern. Individual print is greater than 4″ long and wide; claw marks are almost always present; foot pad makes up approximately 1/3 of the entire print. Trails are usually straight and direct rather than wandering.
Coyote
Coyotes typically walk or trot in an alternating pattern (See Track Patterns); less common gaits include the two-print trot and a lope or gallop in a four-print pattern. Oval tracks are 2.5 to 3.5″ long, and usually show foot pads (aproximately 1/3 of entire print) and claw marks for at least the front two toes. Trails may meander, but are often straight-line routes. You see from the pics the animal did the 2 print trot and strait line, which both Wolves and Coyotes do.
This track comparison makes it more of a mystery…(there are no large dogs around here that could make that, and it would have to leave wolf/coyote track patterns as well)
This however solves the mystery…A lot of people think Coyotes are relatively small, like 25 - 40 pounds, but I have seen several that must run 70 lbs or more, including a dead one in new England as big as a German Shepherd…
I notice the smaller ones are in the south west and plains.
Check this out…
JEFFERSON CITY Mo – DNA tests show that a 104-pound canine shot by a hunter in Carroll County Nov. 13 was an unusually large coyote.
The hunter shot the big canine on opening day of Missouri’s November firearms deer season, thinking it was a coyote. Coyotes are legal game during deer season. However, when the hunter saw the animal’s size, he wondered if he had mistakenly shot a wolf. http://mdc.mo.gov/newsroom/hunter-shoots-unusually-large-coyote-northwest-missouri
No, when they kill their meal their mouths are full…LOL…
All the yipping and Coyote song is when they gather, they call out to each other and start running…the yips are usually greetings…they also call out for mating…
You can ‘talk’ to them sometimes if you are good at mimicking their sounds…
