It’s happened a few times. Some of it I don’t forget.
The classmate I was neighbouring desk with in high school was black…and our German teacher was a racist. One time he did a karate kick towards his head out of the blue. He didn’t hit him, but it was a unsettling experience. Not a very good example for the students…I offered to be his witness if he wanted to take it to the headmaster, but he didn’t.
Another time was in the navy. One of the guys in our platoon held his rifle right beside a Malaysian guys head and pulled the trigger. He probably lost his hearing and blood came out of his nose. Platoon leader asked what happened and I told him, I gave him up, won’t stand for that kind of crap.
This was 20 years ago. I think things have gotten better, but there is still a lot of bad things happening.
When I was no more than 18, I saw a couple of men in a grocery store following and talking about a woman in a hijab. I started following them, planning to make sure the woman gets done with her shopping safely. Luckily, she soon turned to a checkout lane and left. They moved on like they weren’t raging douches who wanted to harass an innocent woman, and I was left relieved that she was okay and sickened by the men.
Once when I was 8 a little girl threw sand at me and my best friend because we weren’t white.
Another time when I was 13 I was walking with my friend and her neighbors called me a gorilla. Same friends parents told her that I was “one of the good ones” after meeting me.
And when I was 15 I was at an adult party where I was waiting my turn to play a round of pong without the alcohol. A guy playing told everyone around him that he “wasn’t going to play with a n****r”.
Racism is pervasive, it’s everywhere
People from other countries like to point out that the United States as being a racist country but the truth is that other countries including Europe experiences racism among their societies to some degree
Never understood the skin colour thing personally, it belongs in the 1930’s .
Alot of the polish get judged here - cos in reality, they have somewhat taken over the town. But they are the ones standing out on the street at 5am, when i see them, going to work a 12 hour shift on the farms here.
And you can bet the english round here, havent got out of bed yet, cos they are selling weed, making thier money.
I know i sound judgemental. But the reason the immigrants have got money round here, is because they got got off their arse and worked for it.
I don’t like mentioning who but many of my relatives are racist, didn’t even like me dating who I’m dating … but it’s not just racism there are other reasons but I’m not allowed to talk here about that.
Racism is tricky when it’s covert. If it’s overt, which today is more rare than it used to be, then it’s easy to spot but it can be hard to prove someone’s motives for actions if they deny it with other logical ways of rationalizing it. Someone could attack a race because they feel poorly about them but then rationalize their actions with another explanation. As long as people can keep their negative opinions to themselves then there isn’t really a problem. Simply being a race does nothing to other races.
I was the designated driver one night. This was post schizophrenia. I drove my friends through the McDonald’s drive thru and they were saying the n word and directing it at the young cashier. I told them to ■■■■ and told the kid I was sorry. I’ve never been into bullying strangers anyways. I’ve had times where I get pissed off at certain races, but it makes me feel like ■■■■ after my rants to myself and feel stupid. I live in the minority part of town with a lot of diversity.
