I’m tapering down the amount of l-theanine I’m taking. I was taking a whopping 800mg a day, now it’s down to 500mg after 3 weeks of tapering.
It reminds me of coming off a benzo. I almost went bananas when I tried quitting l-theanine cold turkey.
I’d like to stress that I was on a huge amount for a long time.

Good to know I’m not the only one. L theanine seems to be doing weird things to me. But with time and patience things will surely improve. Just hang in there!

I find that taking 200mg or more will give me visual distortions and all sorts of issues, but I am perfectly fine with 50mg or such a low dose.

I would love if I could get a quick reply because I’m currently in a bad situation. I don’t take antipsychotic medications because I firstly don’t need to (I have schizotypal personality disorder, not required to be medicated) and I don’t like the crap that’s currently on the market.
My issue is that I was taking l-theanine for days and felt really great, reduced “negative” symptoms and improved “positives”, etc. But then suddenly I couldn’t fall asleep and now I am feeling rather terrible, worsened pseudohallucinations, poor sleep quality etc. I stopped taking theanine after this incidence of sleep issues because of the pro-dopamine effect.
note that 6mg of risperidone for months did nothing against my pseudohallucinations so they’re not caused by the typical disease models, dopamine d2 and serotonin 5ht2a. Actually risperidone made my experiences worse.
I tried taking pyridoxal-5-phosphate (coenzyme b6, increases all monoamines + gaba) for a few days and after a while my pseudohallucinations were going crazy, couldn’t sleep, and I felt awful. At that moment, anything I took (fish oil, melatonin, etc.) worsened my pseudohallucinations so I was really afraid, didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t sleep at all for a period. I think my monamine levels were too high though I’m not sure if it was the increased catecholamines or serotonin that was giving me sleep issues.
Now I’m afraid to take l-theanine to end up in this situation again. So, are any of you taking l-theanine for your schizophrenia or psychotic disorder, taking it without pharmaceutical medication? In other words, if you are sensitive to dopamine, can you still take l-theanine without having to be medicated by a d2 antagonist?
