Why eating too much meat, fish or nuts during pregnancy raises the risk of a baby developing schizophrenia, reveals study

Too much of a protein present in meat, cheese and beans in pregnancy may be linked to an increased risk of the baby developing schizophrenia later in life, new research suggests.
Scientists discovered that an ‘overload’ of a common amino acid - also found in fish and dairy products, as well as nuts and grains - caused symptoms of the mental health condition.
In the first study of its kind, they discovered that when pregnant mice were given excess methionine, their offspring showed schizophrenia-like behaviour.
The researchers hope that their findings could lead to new anti-psychotic drugs.

Child or normal onset sz?

Research has not yet answered that question - probably both, I suspect.

What if we create the imbalance later in life?

I don’t think it would matter much - its a neurodevelopmental issue - and the brain is developing fastest during pregnancy (and then slows down rapidly during the first 3 years of life).

And if we assume dementia has a similar cause?

The study said high levels administered to people with sz caused a worsening of symptoms.

It doesn’t say just how much we’re talking about though, either with the pregnant mice or the sz patients. Dietary levels, or supplementary levels.

I guess all research is validated by the statement: “we hope that this may lead to new treatments”

Put down that burrito, mama!

Expecting mothers should go on the goat diet.

Oprah voice* YOU get Sz, and YOU get Sz!!!

My sister in law is pregnant and I worry about her kids, and jokes are the only way I know how to cope. So, sorry if this is offensive.
