Why does every med

Why does every antipsychotic I’ve been on give me akathesia? The med change didn’t help. I’m still moving. I don’t want to end up writhing in the hospital again. I’ve tried everything my pdoc has thrown at me. To no avail.

How many antipsychotics have you tried?

About 6, they’ve all given movement problems.

Which ones have you tried?

I have been on

Risperidone
Olanzapine
Latuda
Abilify
Haldol
Amisulpride

I got movement issues from Latuda, Haldol and Abilify, but the others were ok

Back with the first antipsychotic Thorazine they called it the Thorazine shuffle. Lot’s of folks walking endlessly. It’s how it affects your brain and your obviously sensitive to such a thing. I’d say newer rather than earlier antipsychotics but it’s such a crap shoot sometimes!

Now on Invega. I’ve taken Trilafon, abilify, Seroquel, risperdal, and olanzapine.

Also my tongue moves by itself. I’m on cogentin for it.

Keep persevering.

There are plenty more meds out there to try. I know it’s a pain switching all the time, but when you find the right one you won’t regret it.

Ok, thanks. I’ll keep trying.

Let us know here how you get on. You will need the support. I did three switches last year and it was difficult, but now I seem to be settled on Amisulpride, and I am happy with it now.

Geodon and Seroquel have controlled my symptoms for a decade and a half, with no akathesia. Talk to your pdoc about those.

I’ll ask about the Geodon, cause I’ve been on the Seroquel.

I get less movement stuff on depot injections compared to oral meds

I’m with you, every one has caused akathisia. I’m on Zyprexa it’s like my fifth AP and it caused some early on but not much and it seems to be lessening. I take cogentin as needed for it.

For me it started like 3 years ago. I walk everyday even inside my room. It doesnt stop for me this akathisia

Have you tried propranolol? It totally took away my akathisia

I have been on many different meds over the years and only now that I am on Latuda am I dealing with akathisia. My pdoc reduced my dose a little and also prescribed me propranolol. The combination seems to be helping, although I still get a mild restlessness some days.

Happy cake day disciple. Yes, my pdoc also recommended a lower dose.
