Why do Indians still live on reservations? (US)

It angers me that my people still live on reservations as if we’re second class citizens. (I’m only part Native American and don’t live on one but I’m still mad)

Native Americans don’t have to live on reservations they can move if they want. Like there’s not a law keeping them there. Unfortunately, many struggle with extreme poverty so moving off the reservation isn’t possible. Or when they do, they may end up homeless.

I agree that the Native American population is very overlooked.

I saw where one reservation… came together to provide solar electricity for all… elemenating a large bill for each member of the community…

They don’t have to pay taxes

There is a high rate of Alcoholism among the Native American population.
It’s unfortunate.

Indians live on reservations because of the same reasons Europeans live on another’s land.

If you own Indian land would you give it back?

You should. But nobody does.

What they did to Aborigines out here in Australia would make your skin crawl let alone the disease and alcohol we added to their existence. It’s not cool and they deserve the help that society should be able to provide if we weren’t in the business of making a select few uber rich over us all!

My rant for the day!

The solution for Native -Americans here in California was that some tribes opened casinos. I really don’t know how it works but from what I understand the tribes here have made millions which they then divide among every member of each tribe. I’ve been to a couple and the casinos are as good as ones I’ve been in Las Vegas or Reno.

Colonialism. Racism. Capitalism. Imperialism.

You know… the usual reasons.

They are all allowed that but a lot of reservations are in shitty isolated locations that nobody would be willing to drive to.

Also the land is also useless as far as resources go. That’s why the government let’s them have it. They were only supposed to be temporary stays until the white people got what they wanted and left. This is actually in the treaties they made.

Some tribes don’t get checks from the government either because (at least according to mine) they never gave up their land so they don’t want forigen influence on their culture. And the ones that do get reperations barely get enough for anything.

Also I’ve heard that some of the tribes are very aggressive if you step onto their reservations because they have their own police force and will beat you down for even crossing the line.
