Why are movie tickets so expensive?

I really want to go see the new avatar movie in theatres this December. When I looked now though a standard 3D movie ticket was $18!! Like that’s insane! I remember as a kid it was like $6 to get into a movie. And let’s not discuss the $8 soda. I bring a backpack and sneak in my own drinks and candy but I really love movie theater popcorn it’s just so expensive.

I’ve only been to see one movie in the past 3-4 years or so

Is it avatar the Airbender or avatar the blue aliens?

I haven’t been to the movies in forever either. I didn’t think people still did that :face_with_tongue:

The blue people movie lol

$18 sounds like a lot but I’m sure the actual tickets are probably loss leaders these days lol. Prices gone up. I’m surprised they aren’t more but I imagine they keep the prices moderate to get their foot in the customers door, and then make the food cost double. Do they still have mattanee movies? Like day time showings where the price is like half. I remember a theatre near me had like near half price matinee showings. But you have to go at like noon.

Prices are crazy now. Its close to $40 for a ticket, dink and popcorn near me. Most of the theaters have a half price day early in the week. Not sure if it works for 3d or imax though.

I pay 25 a month for unlimited movies at AMC theaters, including recliners, imax, and 3d movies. We usually see 3-4 a month on average, but we only keep this pass during the busy movie months of the year.

We never buy concessions and, outside of discount tuesdays, we never buy tickets outside of the pass. I think on Tuesday they are 6 dollars, but not all movies are eligible. With the pass, all of them are.

god help anyone who has a family lmao… if its just you +1 its not too bad… $100 for a movie night date or so (not including dinner). but if you have a family how much is that? say you have a family of 5 thats $20 ticket, $10 drink, $15 popcorn per head :open_mouth:

thats like easily $250 after tax for a family movie night out minimum. if theres an arcade, plushies, other treats etc more.

just out of curiosity i looked into it a bit and calculated what it would be for a family of 5. more than the tickets, the food is craaaaaazy lol… 2 bags of popcorn and 2 drinks and 2 candies is $50 lol
youd probably need 2 of those atleast for 5 people. so $100 for the tickets and 100$ for the food. so i wasnt too far off lol

For sure man. I think kids get a discount but its still expensive as hell. For one person that’s pretty close to being able to see some bands play live along with a drink.

Because it cost more for movie theaters to operate and they charge higher prices because they’re paying more for rent and other things. Also, they lost money due to the pandemic and they’re still trying to make up for all their losses by charging higher ticket prices. And also for the amenities like what @agent101g mentioned they charge more.

I don’t think we even have a movie theater here anymore. They’re building ■■■■ here though.

My local cinema charges £7.50 for tickets and a 20% discount with a card. :film_projector:

$18 is crazy. Where I live you can go to a matinee for $10. Can you get it cheaper during the day?

I found out that we have a more affordable theatre close to me that’s $8.50 for a regular ticket as long as it’s not 3d. It’s a smaller theatre and I don’t know if they have the reclining seats but that doesn’t really matter to me. We never had reclining seats going to the theatre as a kid and I survived

That’s good. Were you set on the 3D version?

No I wasn’t set on 3D I mean it would be cool but sometimes 3D movies make me motion sick.
