Who’s a stickler for grammar?

My dad corrected my grammar today. I told him that I don’t care about grammar. He basically said I was a hypocrite cos I study languages. Tbh grammar is a social construct. It may be important in the corporate world but I don’t see why we need it in every day life.

I switch grammar depending who I’m talking to…

I think that we speak naturally the way that we hear people speaking around us and historically language changes over time. So the fact that people speak certain ways regardless of whether it is technically grammatically correct leads to the establishment of new norms.

In other words, speak how you want

Yeah. I agree. I was a journalism major in college so I was big on grammar. Once I started studying linguistics I learned that people just talk. That’s language and there ain’t nothing wrong with it. I mean if I were at work I’d probably be different.

My mother used to yell at me if I misspoke, but that’s about it. Other than that I think if you are understood when you speak, that’s all that really matters

Like you’re not supposed to end with a preposition, right?

You’re not married to an English teacher.

Right. That’s what my dad was telling me today. Cos I asked him “Where are you at?”

Haha. No I’m not. Your wife is an English teacher I presume?

Oh definitely I figure she’s the grammar police if she does all that. Ain’t nothing wrong with it. People are different depending on your journey in life. Like I said I used to be a journalism major in college. So I understand it.

On studying Spanish you have the tú form and the ud form, but in real life and in boxsets I noticed that the ud form is used without the usted being said.

This causes me confusion as grammatically the third person singular has the same ending as usted.

It is like saying he instead of you.

I find that there is a lot of inference in the Spanish language and you have to assume an awful lot a lot of the time.

What do you think of this @dreamer54 ?

Yeah you can take ud. out if every conjugation has a different form. It’s not strictly needed.

I didn’t know you speak Spanish. I studied Spanish for years and still can speak it somewhat but don’t really remember Spanish grammar.

I’ve never been a stickler for good or perfect grammar. What matters to me is the content . Can I easily read what’s been said, and following on from that understand the content. The inability to grasp what’s been said is rarely down to the quality of the other person’s grammar.IMO if someone needs a post to be written perfectly before they feel able to read it then they’re the one who should be concerned about their own cognitive shortcomings.
