Who here experiences akithesia that interferes with meditation?

I meditate for about 11-18 minutes, twice daily everyday and for the last two days I have been experiencing terrible akithesia in my right foot and leg that is definitely interfering with my ability to meditate correctly. It is impossible to meditate under these circumstances, I’ve found. Has anybody else experienced this problem?

Does it happen at the same time after you take your meds? I ask because I get slight akithesia after taking meds at the same time every night. I take my meds basically the same time everyday and sure as I get it. It’s not overboard but it is noticeable!

Maybye do your meditation before you take the meds?

Yes I take my meds at the same time every night. And I meditated afterwards. Thanks for the tip. I’ll try it.

Have you tried just focusing on what your foot and leg are feeling? Instead of your planned meditation, just spend your meditation time observing the feeling, giving yourself over to it. A few attempts at this and you may find the sensation more bearable.

That’s interesting. Meditate on the akithesia. Why the heck not? Good idea! I’ll plan on doing that next time!

I have to move my legs all the time now. I guess it could be the meds. not sure. I just feel antsy.

It’s probably the meds if you are on any antipsychotics.

I’m only on 10mg abilify.

Abilify is notorious for akithesia. I rub my legs together to get to sleep and that is on zyprexa. My first few nights on abilify was madness…too much energy in the legs…it passed after a couple of weeks but it’s still something to expect on abilify!

I see. Thanks @rogueone. Still, I feel abilify is good. It gets rid of my symptoms and doesn’t have any other side effects that I can tell.

Yeah it’s a small price to pay. I do well on zyprexa but still get akithesia on it. I just rub my legs together till I fall asleep. It’s a bit weird but I’ve learned to deal with it.

I would have liked to stay on abilify as I tried it for a couple of years but it just wasn’t as effective as zyprexa for me!

Anyways…hope you have a good xmas…much peace to you and yours!

I used to be on an AP that gave me what I discovered was restless leg syndrome. My doctor figured it out and gave me a pill for it. It cleared up in 30 minutes of taking the pill.

Zyprexa is a very effective drug. Too bad it is such a weight gainer.

I had akathisia when on amisulpride and I had suicidal ideation because of it.

What pill was it? I’d like to know

I don’t remember. Whatever medication is for restless leg.

My pdoc used to have me on Inderal for akithesia (or restless leg) related to AP’s. I’ve been on Cogentin too. But that affected my memory adversely.
