which would you rate the most
Real life college. Online education effing sucks. It is uninspiring and boring and I’m lucky if I learn half as much.
I went to a real life university and would never do it again. I’d do it online.
from my real life experience of college was that even though i attended about 15 hrs of lectures a week, i was very unatentive and remembered nothing…i was a first year student and the attitude of my college and the vast majority of the students was that college was in a sense “party time” and you did bugger all work
BUT with Open University, youapply yourself so much more and youre not distracted by “party time” students
My attempt at college resulted in me droping out in the first semester…if i was to choose now, i think Open University would be the best focus…Agree or Disagree?
Open university. I lowlevel regret having chosen to attend a university physically, I would strongly chose open over normal for anybody dealing with a psychotic illness.
You have the material sent to you. All the learning is done through a purpose built system that is tried and tested over decades now. And the degree is still valued by employers.
Even people who’ve gone onto become bankers have used the open university system for an education. I’ve seen it myself online.
I would agree you are correct to want to prefer to do it via the Open university.
Like I say. I honestly wish that I had chosen to do it through open university, in fact I have just realised that I could even potentially transfer after I finish my current year.
COMPLETELY disagree. If you let partiers distract you that’s on you. Sitting in front of a screen when having lectures is demotivating as ■■■■and kills all the good discussions. Besides, I learn like 90% of the theoretical stuff from books. The stuff that involves leaving the house is for inspiration, experiments and practicing skills, group work, networking, socializing and great discussions. Online education does a piss poor job of emulating all of that.
Honestly I think the only reason to prefer online education is strong introversion or a tendency to socially isolate yourself.
The open university sends exercise and relevant books to the students. only assessments are done online for the most part, otherwise the discussions and things like that are all done through an online portal.
It really is a lot more suitable for anybody suffering or liable to suffer from psychotic illness.
Attending a brick university requires a lot of self care and also a lot of provision by the university ; which truth be told ; even the more advanced and pastoral universities (eg mine is modern one) , is still not enough because you are expected to perform in the same fashion as a fully abled mind.
Have you got experience with the OU?
Because I’ve heard only good about it. If you’re serious about an education they cater for that.
Brick universities are less education orientated and more student enrichment focused; that is not something they can easily provide to somebody who is ill due to psychotic liability. Imo
I don’t need an explanation of how it works, @anon1466656. I just think it plain sucks and is a poor alternative to an actual college. I have friends who have done it and I’ve had online education since March because of the coronavirus. Technically everything has been seamless. I just think it plain sucks.
Again, why are you trying to explain my experience to me? I have schizophrenia and just completed a master’s. In an actual university. And I would not have been able to do it through Open University.
I’m not sure why you’re being defensive? I’m only asking what your experience was of it.
Karl asked a question and I assume it is because he wanted balanced understanding on it
I’m only discussing it with you so I can understand what is not right about it
I myself am doing online classes too, but that doesn’t mean it’s to the standard of the OU, who specifically specialise in distance learning unlike my university. That’s all I’m really trying to say?
Because you assumed I needed to be explained how it works and then explained to me people with my diagnosis don’t have the experience with college that I do. But I’m not angry, it was just pretty rude of you.
I explained it already in the post you first replied to.
I was explaining it for Karl. Honestly. You take it how you will. I’m writing an post for the original reader to help them, not you.
There was nothing rude about it all. I’m not coming at you. Take your meds or something or, relax. I’ve meant no harm
I have a degree from a brick university and the OU. I think a brick university is good when you feel healthy and ready to socialise. The OU is more suited if you want to pace your studies and prefer studying on your own.
I got a notification because you replied to my post. I guess that’s the source of this confusion.
Also, by the way, pretty damn rude.
Apologies. No hard feelings
Sorry for getting defensive.
I’ve done both in college and online college courses. Back then, I strongly preferred in person classes
Open University for me. I can’t function in a real life college unless I’m allowed to work alone via remote learning.
I like online learning. Especially gamified learning. But lectures are difficult to pay attention both in person and online
My wife does nothing but teach onlilne. She has kids who have completely blossomed in remote learning. There’s no more bullying. They no longer have to bump along at the same speed as the slowest and dumbest kid in the class. They spend less time commuting to/from school and more enjoying their lives. They don’t ever want to go back in a classroom.
I think the more education choices people are offered, the better. People need learning that lets them up their game. If it’s in a traditional school scenario, great. If not, also great.
